Our theoretical models say these two choices are equivalent: If you choose A in one, you should choose A in the other. The methods used for generating QALY weights rely on this! But when we put it to the test (surprise surprise) people don't seem to care much about our frameworks

Would you prefer to writhe in pain or pass away peacefully? Would you rather meet the grim reaper or face physical challenges? Framing matters, right? For less silly examples in the context of health valuation, see: https://t.co/Q9T0QQKQSt, @waq0r @StefanLipman @ChrisSampson87

It's almost four weeks since the horrific terrorist attack on #Israel. A lot has happened, the public debate has become heated and confused. Find thoughts from Vice-Chancellor Robert #Habeck in the video, putting the events in context. 📣With English, Hebrew and Arabic subtitles.

Academic publishing is in deep trouble. We all know it: paper mills, thousands of Special Issues, retractions, skyrocketing APCs... What is going on? @danbrockington , @HansonM90 , @pagomba & me we have a preprint just out, with tons of data. A 🧵 https://t.co/4mitceMZAh

The people who started HTA in the UK or Germany or anywhere else many years ago should have read this paper. The normative foundations of the field would not be so messy. Amazing work 👏

This one took a LOT of effort, was a long time coming and involved an incredible group of people. If you’re interested in healthcare priority setting or HTA, please do take a look. Available open access.

Happy to announce that my article "Permissible preference purification: on context-dependent choices and decisive welfare judgements in behavioural welfare economics" is now available (OA) at Journal of Economic Methodology!

Behavioural welfare economics has lately been challenged on account of its use of the satisfaction of true preferences as a normative criterion. The critique contests what is taken to be an implici...

Ok, after some further research I conclude, most likely, it's just bots. I am a bit disappointed. Thought something more interesting might be going on.

This is why I am getting cynical about academia: the abstract sounds super positive, author claims amazing success, 100+ reposts, 🎉, 🏆... But actually, it's only a spin on a secondary outcome. And they even had a reg. Report! Just imagine what you could do without one!? 🤡😭

@PNASNews published an RCT titled "Unconditional Cash Transfers Reduce Homelessness." Quick take: The RCT found no discernible impact on any primary or secondary study outcome. The claimed effect on homelessness (an exploratory outcome) is unreliable due to sample loss >50%. 1/6

It is sad to see we still need to explain to professors what the problems are with publishing findings based on whether results are significant or not. Accepting counterintuitive claims in top journals only when significant messes up the incentive structure in science.

The idea that publication decisions should be based only on design and not on findings is not sensible. Most things in the world don't work. Given this prior, papers that demonstrate effectiveness are all else equal much more informative.

From my conclusion: "When I started my PhD, I (perhaps naively) assumed that I would finish with a well-formed idea for how health should be valued [...]. The opposite is the case."

NEW: America is a rich country. Britain is a poor country with one wealthy region. People love to compare the UK to Mississippi, but it’s far more informative to look at UK subnationally, too. London ranks fairly well, the rest of the country does not 👉 https://t.co/xrIzwYGaCI
