Blog post after a long break: Updated index to declassified articles from CIA's 'Studies in Intelligence', 1840+ entries. In the post, I explain the background of the list, and what clean-up and additions I've done from a few different archive sources. https://t.co/pU4UGidCl5

Notably, Russia submitted a fabricated satellite image to the investigation, in an attempt to attribute the downing to Ukraine. The JIT investigation later attributed the shootdown to a Russian military unit. /2

10 years ago today, 13 Oct 2015, Dutch Safety Board (DSB) released the results of their MH17 investigation, confirming the aircraft was shot down with a Buk system’s missile. It confirmed the earlier findings of the Bellingcat investigation attributing the shootdown to a Buk. 1/

Yesterday I had the rare opportunity to speak with infantry from Ukraine's 14th Brigade. They had just returned from a 90-day posting in Novoekonomichne - one of the hottest parts of the entire front. Their commander, 'Bobruk,' had some very interesting insights. Thread:

I agree. Artillery and UAS have been the two primary casualty producing weapons in this war (first artillery and now UAS), and not small arms, which SAPI plates are designed to stop (and weigh down infantrymen). Body armor for this combat environment should cover more exposed

I am of the strong opinion that NATO standards and norms around helmets and body armor should reflect the weapons that define modern warfare - airburst munitions, drone attacks, etc. Optimizing for low-velocity 7.62 rifle threats made sense once upon a time, but no longer.

Let's zoom out from the drones. What Europe needs to counter the Russia threat is robust intelligence and counterintelligence capabilities, and credible military power with defense production that could sustain it through war. Early warning and capability to disrupt and deter.

Security trumps economics. Poland’s disruption of the key rail corridor from China through Belarus got Beijing’s attention. Poland has valuable economic leverage over China—it remains to be seen how long this economic choke point will remain closed and if this will induce Xi to

Beijing has been willing to suffer reputational damage in Europe for supporting Russia’s war in Ukraine. But with the Polish border crossing closure, Beijing will now learn that Russia’s war in Ukraine has economic costs, too.

I strongly condemn Russia’s attacks which have targeted residential buildings in Ukrainan cities, killed and injured civilians, and damaged the building of the Ukrainian Government in Kyiv. We need to increase pressure and sanctions against Russia.

An initial assessment of the PLA parade that has just finished in Beijing. Overall, no major surprises although there were was some new equipment. The structure and content of the parade was pretty standard. Five key themes stood out for me however. 1/9 🧵

Russia’s latest strikes on civilian targets in Kyiv are yet another example of three simple facts: 1. Russia has no intentions of ending this war. 2. Russia has not changed its main strategic aim of destroying the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.
