Another example of Vancouver’s BAIT & SWITCH approach to rezoning, supported by Green Pete Fry and One City Lucy Maloney, as well as ABC. COPE Sean Orr abstention was weak — a vote in opposition was clearly called for.

After waiting 10 years for the 37 City-owned child care spaces promised under the Joyce-Collingwood Precinct Plan — tied to 244 new family units — Council voted to convert the child care space to commercial lease. Only Sean Orr opposed the change and abstained. First, the

Sadly, this is an example of the “Too Big to Fail, Too Small to Save” phenomenon I wrote about. In contrast to this, developers and lenders, are getting bailouts. Cities should choose what strengthens communities, not just corporate balance sheets. https://t.co/Bb8KaIHye9

Remember what happened when Canada line construction closed down businesses prior to 2010 on Vancouver’s Cambie Street, many could not recover. There was ample time for the province & CITY to prepare for this, ensure that businesses still got access. It’s simply inexcusable.

Council vote on May 8, 2024 amended the gambling moratorium as requested by the British Columbia Lottery Corporation. This policy change paved the way for the Parq Casino Expansion item at the Public Hearing coming up on Feb 17, 2026 #vanpoli

Does ABC Vancouver REALLY want us to make gambling expansion an election issue? Try it, Ken. We can make it painful. In 2011 when we first fought this, Vision Vancouver was set to allow expansion—until they saw passing it would mean facing election rejection & voted no. #vanpoli

*PLEASE* sign up to speak against the expansion of predatory gambling in Vancouver. A vast majority of Vancouverites opposed & defeated this in 2011 but Ken Sim & ABC Van seem to be paving the way to quietly undo all that. This Tues: sign up! #vanpoli

Downtown Parq Casino request for 300 more slot machines concerns local union @UniteHere40, citing social harms of shifting to ‘gambling-first’ (Public Hearing Feb 17). The community said no in 2011 but now they're baaack. #vanpoli #VancouverNotVegas

PREVIOUS EXAMPLE For sale of 87% of the Vancouver House site to Westbank for $32M (market value $128M), City staff told the appraiser to value the land based on a fictitious rezoning rather than the actual rezoning.  https://t.co/QGZgLoAOxW

Director Real Estate Services Jerry Evans said there was an “independent third-party appraisal”. Actually, staff gave the appraiser specific instructions to ignore the proposed rezoning and highest and best use of the land, and to base value solely on the existing RS-5 zoning.

#VanRE @rrrobbberttt The 2014 sale of 87% of the Vancouver House for $32 million. That sale was at $96 million below market value, as attested to by BC Assessment’s valuation, an independent appraisal, and the $100 million mortgage immediately obtained.

If you lose a receipt for a $50 lunch, it’s an error. If you lose the paper trail for a $20 million land deal, it’s a choice.
