Imagine…people who voted for Lucy Maloney and Sean Orr thought they were voting for a change from ABC. And when they voted for Ken Sim/ABC they probably thought they were voting for a change from Kennedy Stewart. And Stewart was supposed to be a change from Vision Vancouver.
Council vote 4001-4009 Knight & 1348 E24th. In an incredible act of defiance ABC+OneCity/Maloney approve 24-storey tower, against staff advice to reject. In another defiant act of protest, COPE/Orr even dared to abstain (=support). #vanpoli

Yeah, I’ve had it wrong for a long time. > Council CAN defy the Planning Dept. > It’s just developers that Council can’t defy.

Vancouver has moved far beyond the antiquated City Planning they have in Brooklyn. Just imagine — they still expect: .> buildings responding in scale to the surrounding neighbourhood.> a large public open space with trees.
Not sure where the planners all got this notion that buildings have to be in "conversation" with their neighborhood, and "respond" in scale

It’s becoming clearer to everyone. The purpose of public housing policy as promoted by UDI, YIMBYs, the Province, and Vancouver Planning Dept is NOT to achieve more affordable housing. It’s to prop up developer profits by sacrificing the public interest.
The @udibc wants Ottawa to allow foreign investment, notes @SteveSaretsky, citing my column. "IE: the only ones eager to pay exorbitant prices for condos are foreign buyers."."Removing the ban would be political suicide, but don’t be surprised if. ".

In early 2023 DCM Levitt & consultant Chuck Brook initiated secret FCS landowner real-estate planning with the new ABC-dominated Council, ignoring Council’s Oct 2021 direction “to undertake an open and transparent community planning process…through a robust consultation process”.

Only reasonable options for the City:.1. Correct amount Pinnacle still owes, and get immediate payment in full, or start collecting interest on the amount owing.2. Exercise its option to buy back the property for $20M (and ideally revert it back to a designated non-market site).

REMEMBER .City Manager and staff strongly opposed then-Cllr Colleen Hardwick and Council’s push to establish an independent Auditor General position. I suppose this report is an example of why they didn’t want someone looking over their shoulder.
Even when city management was made aware that the employee was inspecting his own company’s work and knew that a conflict existed “steps were not taken” to document the conflict or mitigate it, which “contributed to the conflict continuing for many years”.

Vancouver’s planning chief preens himself on rezoning numbers — many of those won’t be built, but just represent ENTITLEMENTS to be held or sold. Think too of the disrupted lives of tenants of actually existing units marked for demolition (# NOT given).
At the halfway point in 2025, year to date there have been rezoning approvals comprising approximately 7618 homes. This includes 1121 Below Market Rentals, ~100 social housing units and the 169 units seniors care. .
