(ii) the need to move beyond transition metal oxide cathodes and @venk_kris sketched the possibilities in the design space of AFx cathodes for enabling electric aviation.
pubs.acs.org
Current and next-generation transition metal oxide-based rechargeable battery chemistries are likely to fall short of the specific energy needed to electrify aircraft. One approach to enabling...

Two battery chemistry options to meet these challenging targets: (i) anode-free batteries. @VikramPande18 analyzed criterion needed for current collectors to realize good nucleation and fast diffusion.
pubs.acs.org
Lithium metal cells are key for achieving high specific energy for electrification of transportation and aviation. Anode-free cells are lithium metal cells involving no excess lithium with the...

In 2020, @AlecBills1 analyzed battery requirements needed for commercial aircraft and identified the goalpost of Bat1k (1000 Wh/kg) as "Bannister moment" for electric aviation. Subsequently, I led a @Nature perspective with Alan, @YetMingChiang & others.

Following year, @leif_fredericks led a beautiful work with Geoff Bower (then at @AirbusSV) on battery requirements for electric VTOL. We first pointed out the possibility of power fade limiting cycle life rather than capacity fade typical in EVs.
