This work was conducted in collaboration with @cwt_sam, Eli Villa and @PattieMaes at the @MIT @medialab @FluidInterfaces group. Check out our paper for more information 👇.

After this work was completed, we developed a newer method combining video diffusion with gaussian splatting to recreate walkable VR spaces of the past from single images. Example videos of the results from this method can be seen in the first post on this thread.

These results have implications for treatments of memory-related disorders like dementia and PTSD, where clinicians might take patients back in time to help process or reawaken particular memories 🧠🥼 Moreover, the system could also be used to take students back in time⏱️👦🏻👧🏾🏛️.

We found that people felt more strongly that they were reliving being back in that space, remembered more details, had more coherent memories, and had stronger emotional responses compared to watching a video of the same old place 🧠🌇🥽

Comparing photogrammetry techniques like structure from motion with newer approaches like Neural Radiance Fields (NeRFs), we recreated past spaces such as childhood homes from people's personal videos and images and had them "relive" being back in the space.
