Academic job market post! 👀 I’m a CS Postdoc at Stanford in the @StanfordHCI group. I develop ways to improve the online information ecosystem, by designing better social media feeds & improving Wikipedia. I work on AI, Social Computing, and HCI. https://t.co/703Fxe3MdC 🧵

Social media algorithms shape our reality by deciding what's relevant. Independent studies are crucial, but hard without platform cooperation. We've put together practical recommendations for reranking feeds using web extensions. Source code coming soon! https://t.co/LM0rNMK1Ie📄

give each pixel a random Pokemon type, and then battle pixels against their neighbors, updating each pixel with the winning type (using the Pokemon type chart) we quickly see areas of fire > water > grass > fire, electric sweeping over, ground frontiers taking over etc etc

Check out our recent research article from @FluidInterfaces in @NatMachIntell that explores the "placebo effect" of AI and why we're starting to see conversational AI as companions rather than just assistants! https://t.co/JA5OIPBXOO

Finding consensus across so many perspectives & positions was and remains an exciting challenge. It's just the tip of the iceberg and we hope it fosters generative discussion on the real harms of generative AI, the perils of agentifying AI, & the role of industry in shaping AI.

New possibilities for photorealistic synthetic media may undermine trust in authentically captured media through the “liar’s dividend” and prompts research into the role of platform interventions like tracking source provenance and detecting synthetic media downstream.

Generative AI tools may accelerate the creative process through rapid ideation. But this acceleration may also undermine aspects of creativity by removing the initial period of experimentation associated with a blank page. In either case, production time & costs will likely fall.

The Labor Economics of the Creative Industry section, led by @mrfrank5790 with input from @alex_pentland and @AmysImaginarium highlights how new economic theory is needed to characterize the creative process and understand generative AI’s impact on creative work.

We argue that copyright law must balance benefits to creators, users, and society. Copyright laws likely will not adequately apportion ownership rights to artists whose work these systems are trained on, but may favor the end-user. We need new mechanisms to protect artists.

The Legal Dimension of Authorship section, led by @RobertMahari with supervision and contribution from @JessicaFjeld, highlights the legal and ethical challenges of generative AI’s reliance on training data to automate aspects of creation.
