Fun fact: We stock many of Utah's high-mountain lakes from the air. The fish are tiny — anywhere from 1–3 inches long — which allows more than 95% of them to survive the fall.

We're excited to see

using the new Parleys Summit overpass! The overpass and roadside fencing are providing safer migration routes and reducing collisions.
Thanks to everyone, including
@UtahDOT
, who made this wildlife-crossing structure possible.
When 2020 drops you on your face, make like this elk during the rut & get back up.
This big guy was so focused on chasing a cow elk, he didn’t notice Biologist Brian Maxfield in his truck nearby, or the fence. The bull continued chasing the cow, acting like nothing happened. 😀
SOUND ON! You don't want to miss the gutsy growl of this young

. Our conservation officers relocated the animal after he was caught eating chickens in Kanarraville.

Moose are fun to watch — from a distance. Thank you to Colleen Burns for sharing this footage she captured at a lake in the Wasatch Mountains yesterday!

to when we captured and collared a wolverine for the first time in Utah! It happened a year ago this week, so we wanted to share some cool things we learned. In a span of just over three weeks, this small-but-fierce traveler:

Yesterday, some sportsmen came across a bull elk stuck in a bog hole in Garfield County. They called us. Billy Conn, his son Todd Conn, Jim Lamb and Michael Durfey worked together to safely free the bull elk, and we couldn’t be prouder. 👏👏👏

The Utah Wildlife Migration Initiative has seen surprises from the
#wildlife
wearing GPS tracking collars. A collared doe in Rich County was recently killed by a collared cougar and then scavenged by a collared bear! More about the initiative:

You can find enormous

here in Utah. They're an invasive species (so catch as many as you want), and they're really tasty!
See this blog post for tips on catching and cooking them:

😲 Covered 214 miles.
😲 Migrated an average of .43 miles each hour. (Although on some occasions, it covered up to 3 miles in an hour — as the crow flies — in areas with over five feet of snow!)
😲 Crossed from one side of the Uintas to the other four different times.
Piebaldism or albinism?
Our biologists and veterinarian say that because this deer — recently photographed in northern
#Utah
— has *some* dark hair, it’s considered a piebald. The pink nose, a trait typically seen in albinism, makes this deer especially unique.

BEAR RESCUE: It's not often our people are able to take a non-drug approach to get black bears out of sticky situations. But the other day when this young bear was discovered in a sandstone hole, our officer was able to help free him by coaxing him up a makeshift ladder.
Your public lands are being trashed. 😒 Pictured are three DWR wildlife management areas and a fishing access point on the lower Bear River. Help us fight littering on DWR lands by watching for this type of activity & jotting down a license plate number and vehicle description.
BIG FISH ALERT: Biologists were pleasantly surprised during a recent survey at
#StarvationReservoir
. They discovered this 26-lb brown trout in their nets. She was 34" long w/ a 24-inch girth! After taking a few quick measurements, the fish was quickly released.

DWR biologist Cody Edwards was zipping across Great Salt Lake in an airboat recently and passed this critter standing in the lake. It appears coyotes can adapt to whatever life throws at them!

We’re working with
@USUAggies
to study interactions between cougars and other animals at kill sites. When a collared cougar is detected occupying an area over several hours, we visit the site to determine if the cougar has made a kill, and we set up a camera on the carcass.

Exciting news: We were able to place a GPS collar on a wolverine for the first time in Utah! We look forward to learning more about these animals from the tracking data. Learn more about the process of capturing and collaring this elusive animal:
WHEN FISH FLY.
No, it's not hyperbole. It's the time of year when we stock high-elevation lakes aerially. Because the fish are small and released along with water, they easily survive their airplane drop without injury. See the entire video:

Last week, our biologists responded to reports in Parowan of a mature mule deer buck with a huge mass of string (probably a hammock) caught in his antlers and obscuring his vision. After tranquilizing the buck, we removed the string and released him. Looks like he's doing great!
If you see flying

reminds us to add a little humor to our day. (The bull elk was distracted by a cow elk during the rut. We watched him for a while and he was okay 👌)
Shay Hunt recently came across this

buried in sand in

If you see a box like the one pictured, please leave it alone! There could be nesting flammulated owls inside. 🦉 These photos were taken last week while biologists placed GPS trackers on the owls. These

Many thanks to the

Flaming Gorge has invasive burbot. Despite being unwanted in this waterbody, burbot are delicious and typically become more active as the temperatures drop.

Due to extreme drought & wildfire danger, we're temporarily banning campfires and recreational target shooting with a firearm on wildlife management areas (WMAs) across the state.
These proactive, preventative measures will help protect wildlife habitat.
Biologists wired some roadkill deer legs to an aspen tree as bait to attract carnivores for a study in Utah's southeastern region. The bait certainly got a lot of attention over the last eight months!
We’d like to give a huge thanks to our conservation officers and biologists who safely relocated this moose from a North Salt Lake neighborhood to the East Canyon Wildlife Management Area over the weekend.
