New from me in @USATODAY: . What really takes place in the 122 local forecast offices of @NWS and why more than ever it’s critical to protect that work from staff and budget cuts. #wx #wxtwitter.

@COweatherman @NickPBassill And for an example of how it’s done right, I wrote about wildfire weather alerts and response in San Diego County, where NWS, utility officials, EMs, Cal Fire and city services in constant collaboration. OK end of 🧵.

@COweatherman @NickPBassill Bottom line: in face of extreme weather, work to be done in turning good forecasts into good outcomes, an effort that demands more fm state and local officials. It’s a key theme of so I feel distressed (but unsurprised) to see this blame-shifting in Texas.

@COweatherman In Cloud Warriors I write about how New York State has taken action with @nickpbassill and State Weather Risk Communication Center to take forecast info (the generally excellent info from NWS) and bridge gap by making sure local/state officials UNDERSTAND the implication and act.

@COweatherman Forecasting, emergency management, disaster response — all critical public safety functions of government at a time when the very idea of government HELPING people is under (very cynical) attacks.

@COweatherman But we also will see worse outcomes for people in the aftermath from FEMA cuts.

@COweatherman More broadly, despite the good forecasting here, what happened in Texas shows the foolishness of the attack overall on emergency services. These forecasts were good, and we don’t want to see that capability degrade.

@COweatherman I wrote about the Ida tragedy in Cloud Warriors, so the blame-shifting from Texas officials to forecasters feels familiar.

@COweatherman Ideally individuals do the same. Hear a watch on Thursday, start paying very close attention to updates, take action as needed. (Of course, depending on circumstances, not easy or possible for everyone.).

@COweatherman There are some lessons from both. One is that public comms and official response cannot and should not be binary. You start prep and comms with the early forecasts and watches and ramp up if/when they intensify.

@COweatherman When people drowned in NYC in 2021 after heavy rains from Ida, Bill de Blasio also sought to shift blame to forecasters and NWS, claiming city officials had “almost no warning” (untrue).

Here’s another helpful timeline, this one yesterday from @COweatherman just to reinforce the early alarm and the successive warnings. The National Weather Service by no means “missed” this.

First, note from the timeline in NYT piece that forecasters started sounding alarms on THURSDAY.

Texas officials now are busy trying to blame the National Weather Service. Beyond that misguided reaction, a few important points - a quick 🧵.

Really happy I had the chance to talk about cutting edge weather forecasts on @CNBC @SquawkCNBC this morning with @BeckyQuick @andrewrsorkin. So many underappreciated business cases for better weather intelligence. Trick is knowing how to put forecasts to work. #wx #wxtwitter.

If ever there was a week to better understand heat forecasts and defending against extreme heat, it’s this week of sweltering temps. Thanks @CivicCommonsUS for highlighting this important part of my book Cloud Warriors. (Info at .

Combating extreme weather can involve surprising solutions – like shaded street benches around your community. Read @tweber's piece in @TIME about how one Philly neighborhood increased green infrastructure, provided shade and strengthen the social fabric:
