This is how we treat powerful women in this country: hold them to an impossible standard they’ll never be able to meet. She’s a 34 y.o. woman & generational talent making history for winning the most Grammys of anyone ever. And she’s getting dragged for forgetting to hug someone
@iproposethis
I don't think the song is meant to convey such nuance, but simply to break the social conditioning that teaches girls it's their job to make men feel comfortable, even at the cost of their own comfort, and any display of anger or aggression is not OK. I like it for that
I’ve been laid off from the Baltimore Banner. I am sad, of course, but firmly believe these things happen for a reason and something better is on the horizon. I enjoyed working there and got to write some pieces I’m proud of. I wish the very best to all my talented colleagues.
Psyched to announce that as of today I'm the new public health reporter at the Baltimore Banner, and I'm beyond excited to work with and learn from all the talented people there! All the tips to sarah.true

Super interesting. Kudos to you for due diligence with this guy. I hope his parole officer wiped the slate clean for him and they changed their testing protocol.
@BevSmithWrites
Not to mention she spent the whole
night loudly cheering everyone else on and dragged her co-nominee up on stage so she could gush about how talented she is. Then she makes one mistake and nothing else matters. The hate she gets for simply existing is beyond infuriating
I hope I'm not last to announce that my employer,
@BaltimoreBanner
, is celebrating its first anniversary and the paywall is down!
I'm not really a gusher but grateful all the same to work with talented people in a supportive environment where I get to tell stories that matter.

cases & deaths in assisted living facilities shows large increases in cases, particularly among staff – of the 8 states reporting in both June & August, staff cases increased by 156%, from 2,085 to 5,333 cases
@KFF
Research into sickle cell disease, which impacts mostly Black people, was profoundly underfunded for decades. Patients had little hope of living long, full lives. That's finally changing, and Baltimore is ground zero for access to recent advances.

The family should speak with an elder law attorney - can be found thru their professional assoc NAELA. Or, if they can’t afford one, can contact MD Volunteer Lawyers Service
@arghavan_salles
I sincerely doubt she did that intentionally — would be way out of character. Is she allowed to be distracted and caught up in the moment, or does she have to be perfect 100% of the time?
Public health surveillance is fairly useless if not timely. It took a week for Baltimore DPW to get results from routine test showing crypto contamination in water supply. A second test done on Wednesday will take another week
@BaltimoreBanner
@arghavan_salles
It never ceases to amaze me how much hate she gets for simply drawing breath, it seems. To me, it says a lot about the impossible standards of perfection to which we hold successful, powerful women in this country. It’s particularly disappointing when this comes from other women
Ukrainian prez Volodymyr Zelenskyy surprised Johns Hopkins graduates when he gave their commencement speech today. The "handful" of people in the know weren't certain it would happen, "even up until the last minute," a spokesperson said.

Hopkins researchers found alcohol misuse is implicated in 1 in 3 shooting deaths - not a hugely surprising link, but a highly underappreciated one. Why is alcohol largely missing from gun violence prevention programs and policy?

In Maryland, the number of diabetics having to pay sky-high prices for their insulin has now narrowed significantly - state law limiting copays to $30 for many commercially insured took effect Jan. 1, along with $35 Medicare cap

Worked full time while taking full class load in undergrad; felt woefully out of place, esp in grad school where most students had grad level parents; lacked social capital and connections that led to opportunities for other students with professional parents
@kjonesy1587
If only it were just about that. It’s the policing of powerful women in male-dominated spaces (i.e., football). Women who inhabit these spaces better know their place - if they don’t, even thru no fault of their own, the Brads et al. will tear them down. Misogyny, pure & simple.
Howard Co. hosp is building mental health unit where patients in crisis can wait for admission or safe discharge w/out occupying ER space. Smart move that does not address ER as safety net for ppl who need outpatient care but can't get it

Nope, not what I said. Was simply saying that rather than turning to an FBI hostage negotiator to teach you these techniques, ask your SW for help. We use these strategies ALL THE TIME - it’s called “motivational interviewing” (which is really just basic SW principles repackaged)
A national shortage of stimulants used to treat ADHD means people either go to outlandish lengths to get their meds, or go without. DEA restrictions for controlled substances make an already daunting task near impossible.

Halfway thru the post-pandemic mass Medicaid renewal effort, 100,000 low-income Marylanders have now lost their health insurance for "procedural" (i.e. preventable) reasons, following 3 months during which all such losses were paused.

Verbally? Probably no one. It’s a broad expectation applied to women in her position. If you don’t get that I’m not sure what else to say.
I talked to some experts about the various theories circulating re: what's causing early, steep spike in RSV hospitalizations in kids--including the one where previous COVID infection is blamed for immune system "dysregulation."

Medicaid estate recovery can mean loss of a family’s only asset – their home – and the chance to build intergenerational wealth that comes with it
@usnews
4/4
Estate recovery is meant to recoup state spending on long-term care for Medicaid beneficiaries, but recent
@macpacgov
report shows states get back <1% of what they spend on average.
2/4
Meanwhile, the effects of estate recovery are damaging, and perpetuate longstanding racial and socioeconomic inequalities in wealth and opportunity.

Maryland just released its first data on Medicaid coverage losses during post-pandemic mass renewal. 25,000 people, or 1 in 5 up for renewal in April, lost coverage due to “procedural” (i.e. preventable) reasons, just for that first month
@BaltimoreBanner
I'm looking to interview some folks worried about an impending "tripledemic" of RSV, flu, COVID and what it could mean for their holiday plans/travel, or whose family has been hit hard by one or all of these illnesses.
Please pass along and DM or email me! (in bio)
Seven lawsuits filed against Johns Hopkins allege its poor cybersecurity practices led to mass data breach affecting 670 orgs and 46 million people worldwide. Does that make sense? Probably not, experts say.

I think it’s that, and it’s also that this is apparently his wife’s event, and he’s there having fun and making the most of it, versus showing up out of obligation and tolerating until they can leave. It’s supportive.
@arghavan_salles
So very true. I had my daughter unplanned in my late 20s and always thought I’d have at least one more. But, I was never able to find a high quality partner — tho I met plenty who seemed that way at first — so I never did
The Maryland Health Benefit Exchange has said that 80K Marylanders could lose Medicaid coverage during the renewal process. MD Dept. of Health said they are unable to provide an estimate due to the number of variables at play.
In his last video, Suazo is at work on a Baltimore freeway in the snow. He greets his family from "la ciudad de la furia," or "the city of rage;" referencing a classic song by Argentinian rock band Soda Stereo.

@JSwiftEstes
That is very cool but I’m wondering if a woman would attempt this and/or “get away” with it, without being perceived as unprofessional or undedicated - i.e., too much of a *mom* to be taken seriously?
I looked at how Maryland plans to tackle Medicaid renewal for 1.8 million beneficiaries -- an effort underway in all states as the public health emergency ends. Medicaid enrollment in MD increased 25% since the start of the pandemic.
@BaltimoreBanner
I used to be a medical social worker. I routinely saw lives deteriorate and get cut short due to prolonged lack of access to healthcare, and wished that more people knew what this looks like. It's a privilege for me to shine a light on these stories now.
17,000 more Marylanders lost Medicaid coverage in June for preventable reasons, bringing total to 42,000 in the two months since post-pandemic mass renewal efforts began.

Norma Suazo, sister of Maynor Suazo, a Honduran man in his 30s who was working on the Key bridge when it collapsed, said her brother was the youngest of 8 siblings, many of whom also live in the U.S.
“He was the lifeblood of our family,” she said tearfully.

I’m 45 w/ a 16 y.o. and I don’t understand how people around my age with little kids do it. That said, they prob got a lot more accomplished in their 30s than I did.
The in-laws of José López, a Guatemalan who is among the missing, said he was the single parent of his 5 y.o. daughter.
"How do you tell a five-year-old child," his relative said, "that your dad isn't here, he went to work and he's not coming back."
Restorative justice gets a lot of buzz, but does it work when implemented in schools? And how are we measuring its effectiveness?
@MsHallieMiller
takes a look
@BaltimoreBanner
Is the buzz around restorative practices real? Many in Maryland are hopeful the conflict resolution tool can prevent violence among young people and increase engagement in schools. But it requires an astounding commitment:
Carlos´s mother, Lucía Zambrano, is trying to get a visa to travel to Baltimore.
Carlos left Jazmín a voicemail shortly before the bridge collapsed: "Yes my love, we're done pouring the cement and now just waiting for it to dry..."

This is my great-grandaunt's 1917 death certificate. She died of a self-inflicted abortion in Bellingham, WA at the age of 32 (cert. says 30). She left behind a son & daughter, aged 12 & 11. Husband was absent. She was likely poor, and desperate.

As other holdout localities nationwide have backed down, Baltimore city digs in its heels, opting out of the $400 state opioid settlement in favor of pursuing its own lawsuit - the only MD jurisdiction to do so.

It is NUTS that someone would be "blown away" by this. Experience in a low-level service or retail job is an ADVANTAGE, not a detriment - this person will be a lot better equipped to understand PEOPLE from all backgrounds than some rich kid who never had to work that type of job.
@arghavan_salles
The phrase “completely ignored” sounds pretty intentional to me. And even the most composed among us can slip up, and should be allowed to do so without the internet exploding. TS isn’t exactly known for being a jerk.
Baltimore DPW announced detection of crypto in the water last week & blamed lab processing time for inability to get results of follow-up testing for another week. Turns out, 24-hr testing for crypto is readily available & commonly used

I almost cried this morning when I watched a UMMC video of Larry Faucette, the second-ever recipient of a transplanted pig heart, one month post-op. Don’t think I’ve ever seen someone who, tho very ill, was so obviously ecstatic just to be alive.
My mom is also saddled with student loan debt, from a thwarted attempt to attend college later in life. She's 67, on a fixed income, and pays the minimum monthly payment (hundreds) the loan company will accept - she could live so much better if she didn't have to do this.
I am telling this story bc every time I see someone say erasing debt is a gift to elites I think about my mom, a woman who never saw her way out of the working class.
I think it’s critical to keep chronicling how many low-income Marylanders are losing health insurance due to the nationwide Medicaid unwinding – something I was doing at the Banner. So, here’s a brief 🧵w/ some HUGE December numbers:

They are using an "outside lab." From what I can tell has to be accredited water testing lab and there doesn't seem to be a lot of those nationwide. Still, should be able to get quicker results for a public health threat. Testing is $$$ already and guessing it's more to expedite
