Depression among individuals during pregnancy and up to 1 year post partum in low- and middle-income countries is common and urgently requires action to improve health outcomes for women and infants.

A woman experiencing postpartum psychosis may show signs of mania, depression, or both. She may have aural hallucinations, paranoia, or delusions. She may, for stretches of time, appear to be perfectly normal. Diagnoses are rare; treatment is rarer still.

A population-based study of 57,934 pregnant women in Denmark and Norway found that women who were previously stable antidepressant users but discontinued treatment late in pregnancy presented an elevated probability of postpartum initiating psycholeptics.
