Not everyone has time to sift through civic documents or attend council meetings, or the desire to do so. Every other week, you'll get the scoop on what's happening in Chapel Hill and Carrboro and what it means.

It's horrifying that a 4th grade teacher in the school district is working a second shift from 5:30-3:30AM every night We understand why the school district deleted this tweet - it's horrifying - but people need to see this:
This is horrifying. The Campus Y is a hub for so many groups, it’s a gathering spot, it’s a place to read and study. To do it overnight and after classes end…
You cannot tell the story of the crackdown on the campus Y and the push to defund DEI without looking back at Tim Moore and Peter Hans' roles in trying to defund affinity groups since they were UNC students. Both have worked to defund these programs for over 30 years.
Hey. We’re a group blog but many of us are also students, staff and faculty at UNC. We’re going to be at the Chapel Hill Public Library quietly reading and clearing our heads today. Don’t want to be alone? Come join us.
every post on chapel hill social media right now
q: is that a car alarm?
a: no, cicadas
q: is that a constant train?
a: nope. cicadas again.
q: does anyone else hear that noise?
a: cicadas.
Does anyone else just feel both drained and jumpy at the same time? (I'm sorry. I know this is a group civics blog account, but many of us are UNC staff, faculty, and students. And this is terrifying.)
Another metric that reporters might use when reporting on the makeup of the Board of Governors is "How much has each member or their spouse donated to Tim Moore?"
Chapel Hill: Why does Durham have all the good restaurants now?!
Also Chapel Hill: If you'd like to start a food truck, please consult your legal team and financial advisors and hire a planning firm.
Ok. Here’s a story: on monday of this past week we got a tip from a very good source that m4l was planning to run 4 school board candidates and file on Friday.
at that point, 0 people had filed for school board.
we told our readers. 52 people reached out to us.
The Chapel Hill Police Department told The Daily Tar Heel that it will not be closing Franklin Street because of a lack of people downtown. The Town previously said it would be closing several streets.
Small (Carrboro owl) world story.
1. We publish a piece about owls stealing people's hats.
2. A person writes to us and says his hat was also stolen by the same owl.
3. We publish a picture of his hat + owl.
4. A different person finds his hat.
we are going to take the day offline. yesterday was a lot - we ask all candidates running for office to not publish our addresses publicly. it’s scary and inappropriate.
be back tomorrow.
we started this blog as a humor blog covering civics in chapel hill and carrboro. we hope one day to be able to return to humor - but what’s happening across our state now isn’t funny.
Them: "the radical dark money machine is ruthless and will now ruin this place"
Us: "oh man, do you think we can have food trucks in Chapel Hill now?!"
if we want democrats to win the governorship in 2024 in nc, we should be doing everything in our power to register as many young people as possible and encourage them to vote in municipal elections.
🚨🚨 Does someone want to build <gasp> housing in your neighborhood for people who don't already live there? 🚨🚨
Read our guide for how to stop and stall the project forever
In last night's candidates forum, David Adams, one of the candidates for Chapel Hill Town Council repeatedly told UNC students, "Don't rely on the

This was a day after the DTH published this deeply researched investigative story:
Hello! We are trying to get a high quality recording of the cicadas screaming in Carrboro and Chapel Hill. If you are experiencing this and have decent audio equipment, send it to us! It’s so eerie and should be preserved!
Tomorrow, the Chapel Hill Town Council will vote on a text amendment that will allow people to build duplexes and small homes throughout our community, not just in a handful of neighborhoods.
The election tomorrow is about housing. Even when it's about parks, it's actually about housing.
And all candidates claim to be pro-housing, which makes it hard to know whom to support.
My hot take? Vote for those who are "yes and" not "yes but" on housing.
A thread:
we are happy to talk to any reporters interested in covering this. the level of vitriol and personal attacks in chapel hill directed towards a pretty cheerful volunteer progressive group blog is a microcosm of what’s going on nationally.
🧵
In the last two weeks, in the context of student protests against genocide in Gaza, the North Carolina Board of Governors passed a measure in committee to repeal the state’s DEI policy and replace it with a policy focused on “equality” and “campus neutrality.”
We are homeowners who live here too, and we know that Chapel Hill’s “quirky college town” will not be lost because of denser living arrangements, but because the cool people who once occupied our town — the artists, writers, chefs, musicians — can no longer afford to do so.
Thank you to everyone who reached out today. This is one of the reasons we protect our donors - we put ourselves out there. We’ve been doxxed twice - once by a leader in CHALT and once by a mayoral candidate.
the blogbloggers are currently working from breakaway cafe in carrboro and every single table around us is discussing how hard it is to buy a home here.
since we posted our story about the owl who steal hats in carrboro, we have received two other photographs of the same owl with different stolen hats.
clearly this needs a task force
@damonseils
prediction: chalt will disband and they will form a newly named organization, as they have in the past.
we're keeping an eye on this website, which was on the searing signs around town. paid for by one of his donors.
hey! if you’re reading this, please consider giving 10 bucks to

Hey. We have something serious to talk about.
Earlier today, one of CHALT's leaders doxxed us on NextDoor. Our addresses were collectively posted in the semi-private group she runs.
Voters who vote by mail in the 2023 NC municipal elections must include a photocopy of an acceptable ID.
Don't have a photocopier? No fear. We're hosting a photocopy-your-ID-a-thon outside of the

on Sunday and Tuesday. You'll also be able to register to vote on-site.
There are two brand new Democrats running for town council in Carrboro. Both Stephanie Wade and April Mills became Democrats in June 2023, a month before filing for office.
the save chapel hill folks are now selling youth t-shirts, which we are sure will go over well at elementary schools with the teachers who currently have to drive an hour or more to work in our school system. so gross.
Scott Yenor, an Idaho professor, was behind an extremist website that spread conspiracies and attacked LGBTQ+ people. Yenor is the author of the white paper on DEI and the UNC System.
a shoutout to
@indyweek
for doing really nuanced and in-depth coverage of issues in chapel hill and carrboro during the election. we’re so grateful you assigned a reporter to this beat.
UNC staff member: "A meeting that was supposed to be two weeks ago was rescheduled for today due to the last shooting. Just received an email that it will be rescheduled again due to today's armed and dangerous person alert."
Earlier today, a candidate for
@chapelhillgov
office released the home addresses of several private residents in their campaign newsletter, simply because the candidate feels they have been critical of their statements and actions. Please read my statement on this matter.
we have figured out one of the people who created the save chapel hill dot org website. it did not take long.
✅ moved here eight months ago
✅ lives in a 1.975 million dollar home
As campaigning ramps up, we are again hearing a lot about “ugly” apartments in Blue Hill. For those who may be new to town, you might be wondering how beautiful it used to be.
In CHALT's latest newsletter they finally admit they are opposed even to developers helping the town build affordable homes.
Who is going to build homes if not developers? CHALT? They have zero plans, zero credibility on housing issues.
Also, Tar Heel is two words.
Another defender of the historic district resides in a $1.4 million home built on a vacant lot in 2016, which makes the home more historic than TikTok but less historic than the Instant Pot.
Last Friday, UNC sent out an email after business hours - a Friday news dump - announcing that the Campus Y would be reopening. Many news orgs. repeated this press release from UNC.
But it's more complicated and nuanced.
