Since I've apparently just informed a LOT of people about Abbas Kiarostami for the first time today, I am going to to put together a Mania Akbari collection soon. She's done a LOT of work for feminism in Iran and I don't want you all thinking of her as "Kiarostami's victim."

One thing I love about Tolkien is the sheer number of allusions to myth & folklore in his books. Why does Bilbo see a white deer in Mirkwood? In Celtic myth, white animals herald encounters with the Other World. Where did the dwarves get their names? From the Poetic Edda.

People say nineteenth-century novels are “boring” but the nineteenth century gave us Frankenstein, vampires, lesbian vampires, men who stay young while their portraits age. It gave us the Raven. It gave us Alice in Wonderland. It gave us wives in the attic.

Too many in the Caribbean are boot lickers who do not gaf about their own people. The impending invasion is fully supported by entrenched regimes against les damnés de la terre, the legacies of plantocracy we never dismantled

Written a blog based on this experience as I have my thoughts... forgive my clickbait title lol https://t.co/eEZFfbbLEF
Did community lecture today on Jane Austen, horror + empire. Feeling like 'what are orgs doing about white women's radicalisation into the right?' (obv thinking of areas like charity). The kinds of images these texts celebrate is bait. Green + pleasant land fi rahtid lol 🫢🙃

I wish y’all could’ve heard my students debating dream science yesterday. it was thrilling. they were so heated, arguing about what consciousness is, what is human that science can’t explain, self reflection & discovery, how the sciences & humanities must talk. these are the

There's ofc romance but I'll die on the hill that Jane Austen- and authors like her wrote stories about property and white escapism built on enslaved labour. This is why the far-right love Austen lol, Austen is Britain's Gone with the Wind; Scarlett is Emma🙃😂
Men assume Pride & Prejudice is a Hallmark romance when the plot is driven by the Bennet sisters’ fear of starvation because they will be homeless when their father dies. It’s a book about money, about people, and those who dismiss it as saccharine fluff are cheating themselves.

I would love to read an interview with him where someone actually asks him about the racial politics of this movie. I'm also happy to do that interview myself.

If you go outside and talk to people who are not college educated or specifically well read, you might start to understand how intimately they are aware of the workings of the system that is crushing them. There is wisdom outside of institutions and that does not devalue the work
