I'm looking forward to singing Stanford's The Lord is my shepherd tonight. Written in 1886. The composer Howells called it "one of the supremely lovely anthems of all our history". First time for me! @ChChCathedralOx with @CSCCOxford

If David Skinner is right, Tallis's monumental piece may have been written for the re-dedication of Canterbury cathedral in 1541. See our blog for the full story, hear the work in Oxford tonight!! https://t.co/jh3scu9KuR @OxfordProMusica thanks to @bodleianlibs @Alamire

Tallis's "Gaude Gloriosa" is a setting of 9 prayers to the Virgin Mary, each beginning with the word "Gaude".  We don't know who wrote the text. David Skinner conjectures that the piece could have been inspired by a stained glass window at Canterbury Cathedral. @OxfordProMusica

We're looking forward to singing @_kerensabriggs's Requiem this weekend. This will be the first Oxford performance and we think about the fourth performance anywhere. First performed by the @BBCSingers in 2022, Requiem has been recorded by @ChoirKCL. @OxfordProMusica

@_kerensabriggs explains that the person who commissioned the Requiem heard her anthem Media Vita which was taking part in an Evensong World Cup on Twitter (!), and asked if there was anything else she wanted to write! @OxfordProMusica @ExeterCollegeOx

This discovery led to the redating of Tallis's great work which is now thought to be from the early 1540s. Thanks to #DavidSkinner @Alamire @bodleianlibs Hear the work on 2 March along with new Requiem by @_kerensabriggs

We've waited 38 years for this view! With the scaffolding fully removed from the Cathedral's East End, we can now admire the original beauty of the entire exterior as it would have looked in the 14th century after the Spire was added. 📸: Martin Cook
