🌊 Big win for the #DeepSea At the #IUCNCongress members voted to adopt: ✅ Motion 032 – Protecting seamounts and vulnerable marine ecosystems from destructive practices ✅ Motion 035 – Protecting mesopelagic ecosystem integrity Thanks to those who voted science into policy 👏

Yesterday 95% of govt, civil society & indigenous members at @IUCN World Conservation Congress voted to end bottom trawling on seamounts on the high seas by the end of 2026. NZ is one of the countries that needs to transition away from bottom trawling @chrisluxonmp @chrishipkins

Day of shame for #NZ. In late timeslot towards end of high-level segment of UN General Assembly, Foreign Minister reveals what Cabinet decided 11 days ago: that unlike many others with whom #NZ normally is likeminded, Govt will not recognise #Palestine. Incomprehensible.

On the same day the world wakes up to this story the NZ Minister of Ocean & Fisheries welcomes the reopening of oil & gas exploration in NZ ( he’s also Minister of Resources). NZers deserve a new Ocean Minister @chrisluxonmp @chrishipkins

I’m one of many NZers who studied Art History at school. It provides students with a lens on life. Shame that your govt doesn’t want young New Zealanders to experience that breadth of perspective and brilliance @chrisluxonmp @EricaStanfordMP

A major backlash is building against the Government’s decision to cut art history as a standalone subject in secondary schools.

Seamounts are vast underwater mountains, home to deep-sea corals, sharks, whales & fish. They’re biodiversity hotspots but destructive bottom trawling puts them at risk of irreversible damage. #ProtectSeamounts

Ahead of the @IUCN World Conservation Congress, the DSCC & @WWF_Australia urge IUCN members to support a motion calling for seamounts & other vulnerable marine ecosystems protection from destructive activities. Our #OceanLifelines need urgent protection! https://t.co/b1b0z6bsRF

In 2023 at #COP28, agreement was reached on need to transition away from #fossilfuels. Now #NZ flies in the face of that by once again allowing offshore oil & gas exploration. Yet another reputation-destroying move. Time to pivot to #energytransition.

The rise and fall of orange roughy. When will New Zealand start learning from the lessons of stock crashes and habitat destruction elsewhere? Better now than never https://t.co/nUsqoKIYtw

The orange roughy has been the target of intensive fishing activity by New Zealand bottom trawling vessels for decades. Now, new data shows that this population is on the verge of collapse.

The Orange Roughy population is collapsing! The New Zealand government is now consulting on proposed changes to catch limits and potentially closing an area to fishing. 🗣️ Have your say by 28 July. Call for a ban on bottom trawling to #ProtectSeamounts: https://t.co/12AyarHDOr

Seamounts need stronger protection. 95+ scientists have already signed an open letter asking States and the UN for strong commitments to #ProtectSeamounts from destructive fishing. Are you a scientist? Add your name today! ↩️ @OceanIPSO

In the North East Atlantic the orange roughy fishery was closed due to the poor status of the stock ( closure rolled over again in 2024). Time for #NZ and @sprfmo to do the same @chrisluxonmp @mangonui08 @MFATNZ @MPI_NZ
Essential listening here. Excellent summary of how a once abundant deep sea fish is now at risk. Orange roughy are caught by bottom trawling. Trawling wipes out the ecosystems where roughy congregate. #BanBottomTrawling #ProtectTheOceans

This is New Zealand’s Minister of Ocean and Fisheries. No wonder the #NZGovt didn’t send him to the UN ocean Conference. He would have been a fish out of water. #defendthedeep @chrisluxonmp @HelenClarkNZ @GreenpeaceNZ @WWFNewZealand

The NZ fishing companies #sealord and #talleys continue to bottom trawl on seamounts in the South Pacific and the NZ Govt of @chrisluxonmp is condoning their continuing destruction of vulnerable marine ecosystems. #defendthedeep

For a second time, Greenpeace Aotearoa activists have confronted a bottom trawler off the East Coast, rebranding it an “ocean killer” in protest at its destructive fishing activities.

At the UN Science Congress 3 weeks ago scientists presented on the high populations of sharks and rays that hang out in numbers around seamounts. Instead of protecting those biodiversity hotspots NZ let’s it’s vessels drag nets over them, destroying biodiversity #defendthedeep
So awful to see these little sharks desperately trying to escape a needless death in a Talley’s bottom trawling net. #BanBottomTrawling
