Great to be in conversation with @4Hussain this morning as we took a tour of St Clements CLT in Bow and talked about continuing the work in Newham on genuinely affordable housing.

130 housing estates threatened with demolition and rebuilding rather than refurb, which is cheaper coz… there’s a 20% VAT tax on refurb! Why, in an ever-deepening climate crisis, won’t the Treasury make this simple change? Who are the Blockers?? https://t.co/z2lqOE2YRU

The government should reduce the VAT paid on retrofit projects to reflect their environmental benefits compared with new-build, a committee of MPs has said

I now pay @lbbdcouncil £11,000 per year. Broken down monthly. Council tax: £186 Service charge: £550 B&D energy (council company) £220 My mortgage is only £896, meaning the council costs me more than my home, every month. Tell me again the affordable housing program is

Shared ownership is a con job. One of the worst leasehold cons there is. Calling it affordable is incredibly misleading & our own parliament says it is not delivering an affordable route to home ownership. End shared ownership & end leasehold.

London’s low density is used to justify council estate demolition/ rebuilding with dense market housing. But low density has a lot to do with outer London semi’s and terraces – strange no proposal to smash up private streets and replace them with tenements

From 2018 our response to estate ballots and our concerns - the reality is actually a lot worse than any of us could have imagined. Just because you live on a council estate your access to equal & fair democratic processes are denied. All we ask for is a level playing field 😔

This is our briefing & response to @SadiqKhan regarding the proposals on estate ballots put forward in July. We welcome the general principle that estate demolitions shouldn’t happen unless residents have voted in favour of them. But there are aspects of the policy that worry us

Democracy can’t be thwarted by lawfare. Investments carry risk. Freeholds aren’t special.

It’s a travesty of democracy! The freeholder lobby still won’t accept the will of the people and is trying to appeal a High Court ruling that defended Parliament’s choices on leasehold reform. We’re in the Mail calling out this cynical game.

Steve Reed is having another tantrum.   The govt set unachievable housing targets, but housebuilding has stopped.  1m homes are approved yet remain unbuilt.   So who does he beat up? Councils. Do councils build homes? Nope - govt financial formulas ensure they can’t.

Local authorities use the credibility of being government agencies to peddle disinformation at will - knowing that due to their government status people will believe their lies. It is now vital that @IslingtonBC investigate fully & while doing so delete their misleading post.

I am publicly asking Islington Council to delete this tweet. Your comms team got too excited and publicly dismissed, in its entirety, any eviction or disposal of belongings post-eviction. As of Friday 14 November 2025, the council opened a formal investigation into the alleged

But councils DO NOT block large developments! They permit development WAY FASTER than builders build. Can't govt see (don't want to see?) this blatant land grab will send land value up and up? More sites released, no more houses built. @FT @LGAcomms https://t.co/TPtpJiIvtg

Shocking that @IslingtonBC are putting PR firefighting higher up their priority list than actually housing this man. The contempt that councils show people that need their help is sickening - nobody should have to go through what this man has, absolutely nobody. Well done to
