What is also surprising - only in S Hemisphere the tropical amphibians are the most threatened (including the Amazon amphibian hotspot of biodiversity). In the North it’s the temperate species that will take the toll. Action is needed now!

They suffer from overheating due to exposure to temperatures outside of their thermal safety margins. If global warming maintains its pace, by the end of the century 400 species may be directly threatened with extinction, regardless of access to water or shade.

We of course could not have data for each species in each location. Did it stop us? No-no :) we extrapolated species range data and data to model amphibian thermal responsiveness in a 1x1-deg grid. The results are worrying to say the least. Currently 2% of all species is at risk.

We could have used the simple average ambient air temperature in our analyses. Have we? Nope! We employed fine-scale microhabitat biophysical modeling to get to the bottom of conditions ACTUALLY experienced by any given species of amphibians.

The take homes? We started with a limited database of thermal tolerance data for amphibians, collected for ~500 species out of 5000 we wanted to target. Did we worry? No :) we used the power of phylogeny and eco data to impute the missing >4000 spec with astonishing robustness.
