@netflix
docuseries trailer “Pandemic: How to Prevent an Outbreak” releasing 1/24/2020 on Netflix. It was a privilege being part of this international series and highlighting the important topic of pandemic preparedness 😷
I've responded to multiple epidemics & pandemics over the years from Ebola to Zika to Measles, each facing its own set of obstacles.I'm used to outbreaks being politicized but I've never witnessed this amount of stupidity that has plagued this pandemic from the get-go by electeds
It’s been almost 1 year since the world woke up to the news of a novel coronavirus. Since then it has impacted every facet of our lives. I don’t want to go back to pre-Covid times, I want to move forward in a post-Covid world where we invest in lives, public health & equity
The delta variant which has a viral load 1000x higher than the original strain has shown that even those fully vax & infected w/delta are able to transmit the virus to others. Clinically, fully vaccinated persons are still protected against severe illness, hospitalization & death
As Trump arrives at WalterReed Hospital out of an abundance of caution I can’t help but to think of the 208,371 COVID19 deaths in the U.S. & many that could’ve also been saved due to “abundance of caution” & not when they were already at alarming low levels of oxygen upon arrival
It’s just pure luck that the omicron variant isn’t as virulent, or worse than the delta variant.
We may not be so lucky the next time an emerging variant strikes.
This means be shouldn’t just double down on vaccinating the word, we need to quadruple-down on it. And fast.
New York is not a ghost town.
New York flattened the curve.
New York follows science and public health recommendations.
New York turned the corner and serves as a model for the rest of the nation.
New York is investing in test-trace-isolate-quarantine.
#Debates2020
Zero COVID19 has never been the goal in U.S.(nor a realistic one), and as such transitioning COVID19 into becoming endemic and decoupling infections from hospitalizations should be the primary goal.
The COVID19 vaccines help us achieve exactly that.
Back in March/April Dr. Stephen Morse from
@Columbia
and I debunked
#COVID19
myths with
@businessinsider
. We’ve learned a lot since then and are excited to share an updated video debunking and addressing new and old myths.
Long Covid is a bigger problem than we thought
A large study has revealed that one in three Covid-19 survivors have suffered symptoms three to six months after getting infected.
The entire world is looking at America & laughing
We’re sending a global message of complete disregard of public health guidelines & risking potentially countless other lives/more infections
The narrative he’s writing is that the WH cant do what’s needed to keep Americans safe
When hospitals are full and are operating under crisis mode but indoor dining is still packed with patrons, you know the priorities are all wrong.
11 months into this pandemic and we’re still treading water and making the same mistakes over and over again.
Despite shattering daily records of cases & deaths, we are still divided. Battling misinformation, simultaneously battling the virus. Hospitals filled with patients, restaurants filled with patrons. HCWs begging for masks, while many refuse to wear one!
@dougducey
@mkraju
Whether it’s the Omicron variant or the Delta variant, vaccination is key and wearing masks in public spaces. Preventing the spread of this virus requires all the tools in our toolbox.
“The most important statistic about the vaccines approved for emergency use in the US — Pfizer/BioNTech, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson — is zero: zero deaths or hospitalizations among the patients who were given the vaccines in their clinical trials”
COVID-19 testing results are half day passes. Not multi-day passes.
A test is a point in time, meaning at the moment you took the test, whether you’re positive or negative.
That result can change day by day. That’s why serial testing is best.
If you could see a
#COVID19
patient struggling to breathe like we do in the ER, you’d immediately understand why we’re so worried and why it’s safest to cancel your in-person family meetups over the holidays.
Next year will be safer and we’d like all of you to be there for it.
Having honest, open and data-driven conversations on off-ramps/metrics to loosening restrictions like mask mandates in schools is not only needed but essential for all parents, caregivers, children . This shouldn’t be a political or polarizing issue.
To appreciate how science has enabled us to live healthier, safer and longer lives today.
There are more than 25 vaccines that prevent life-threatening diseases that have saved millions of lives around the world and reduced the burden posed by these threats.
Along w/pandemic fatigue many are experiencing, adding in compassion fade, a term
@drsanjaygupta
recently stated which hits home - as more people are getting infected & dying, many are becoming numb & caring less to this daily tragedy
Please do not let your COVID19 guard down
Started reading
@ASlavitt
book “Preventable”
He writes:
“the pandemic was not a test of our technology, our prowess, and our wealth; rather it was a test of our political system, our health care system, our system of deregulated capitalism, our shared values, and our humanity”
1 of every 17 people in the U.S. has been infected with COVID19
1 in 1,000 has died of COVID19
Yet the worst is yet to come.
The next 4-8 weeks will be the darkest days of this pandemic in the U.S.
Every person plays a role. Every action counts.
Zero COVID was never a realistic, practical or achievable strategy in the U.S.
Unmitigated viral spread is also not a strategy
The realistic goal is low levels of transmission, high levels of immunity in the population and easily accessible therapeutics among other factors
Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine was 100% effective in kids age 12-15 in longer-term study
“The longer-term analysis of the Phase 3 trial data showed no serious safety concerns over a follow-up period of at least six months after the second dose of the vaccine”
I received the Moderna COVID19 vaccine at
@NYCHealthSystem
Queens Hospital today.
As a breastfeeding mom, I decided to get vaccinated based on how mRNA vaccines work, current data, recommendations by CDC and ACIP and in consultation with my healthcare provider.
Increase in COVID-19 Pediatric Hospitalizations Across New York State with “approximately half of the admissions are <5 years of age and thus vaccine ineligible.”
1) CDC reports 5,800 Covid infections in fully vaccinated people
“Some became seriously ill and 74 people died...396 -7% - of those who got infected after they were vaccinated required hospitalization.”
@CNN
Important to note, it’s not unexpected to see breakthrough cases.
My 1st grader’s classmate left this at our doorstep today. It’s the little acts of kindness that go along way. As we continue to brace for what is already the worst health crisis of this century, my ❤️ goes out to all those on the frontlines from docs to RTs & everyone in between
It was 6:30am at Penn Station the day after election 4 years ago, I was headed to work when a white man came up to me and said I should go back to my country since Trump won.
Getting off the A train, I remember crying walking to work knowing this would be a terrible 4 years.
I remember the day after the election four years ago. We were in our health policy class
@HarvardChanSPH
. Our professor was in tears, as were many of the students. We knew that the health of our nation would be under threat in a way like never before. Today, we will change that.
This past weekend, I was able to finally see my parents in MD, both of whom are fully vaccinated.
I waited what felt like forever to see them after we all got vaccinated (+2 weeks after last dose), be able to hug them and share a meal together.
It was the best feeling ever.
When I hear people say “COVID19 broke the healthcare and public health systems in the US”
Nope.
It was broken before Covid19 ever hit. Just look at how we finance health:
Both Public Health Emergency Funding and Hospital Preparedness funding dropped by millions over the years
One the tragedies of this pandemic has been the politicization of a simple public health intervention that could easily save thousands of lives: masks.
I delivered my 3rd child Jan 13 this year, cut my maternity leave short & went back to work 1 wk later to begin preparing for & then responding to COVID19 in NYC
Its been nonstop since
I’m finally taking a couple days off later this wk but this news cycle is making me nervous😬
Public health officials often get missed with all the thanks going around in twittersphere. Along w/frontline HC workers, public health workers are silently & aggressively working behind the scenes to also save lives
You may not hear from them as much but they are a mighty force
After nearly 3 weeks, I was finally able to fully taste and smell my morning cup of coffee today after testing positive for COVID weeks ago. A lost sense of smell, known medically as anosmia, is increasingly being noted as a symptom of the coronavirus:
The omicron variant is the 5th highly significant variant of the original SARS-COV-2 virus, and it likely won’t be the last.
With only 9.5% of people in low-income countries having received at least 1 dose, it’s imperative we vaccinate the unvaccinated.
Sure, blame the scientists, docs, public health professionals, epidemiologists for spreading “misinformation” about the realities & challenges of
#COVID19
& believe politicians + reality TV stars & those with no medical or PH background on whats truly happening in this country🤦🏽♀️
The biggest weapon we have against
#COVID19
is our behavior. As States ease restrictions (whether they’re ready or not, and almost none meet the criteria to open) keep in mind it’s our actions that can change the impact & trajectory of this pandemic.
If you’re unvaccinated, eligible and have access to a COVID19 vaccine, you’re not only endangering your own life but also those around you who remain vulnerable to illness.
Hospitals around the nation are still in "conservation mode" for N95 respirators. As we begin to see a third peak in COVID19 cases, and hospitalization rates too are increasing nationwide, it's imperative the federal govt invoke the Defense Production Act early
New York State mandates COVID19 vaccine for health care workers including staff at all hospitals, nursing homes, adult care, and other congregate care settings, must have gotten at least one dose of coronavirus vaccine by Sept. 27 👏🏽
We all need to work together to
#FlattenTheCurve
. Please do your part, and stay home. If you have an emergency warning sign/symptoms including trouble breathing, get medical attention right away

I’ll be teaching at
@Harvard
as a guest speaker throughout the semester in a Leadership Decision Making Course this spring covering the topic of addressing/combating mis- and disinformation surrounding COVID19 and addressing vaccine hesitancy. Lots to discuss and much to cover.
A common question many of us often get from the media/public is “which COVID19 vaccine is better - Moderna, Pfizer, J&J...”
Simply, all COVID19 vaccines provide protective immunity & even more importantly prevents severe disease that can cause hospitalization and death.
Asking my 5 year old on the eve of starting kindergarten what he’s most excited about for tomorrow:
Hasan: “I’m excited about you waking up super early and making me sprinkle pancakes for my 1st day. I’m going to eat 5 of them.”
I guess I’m making sprinkle pancakes tomorrow 😂
Hard to believe this was just a few months ago (December 2019) when

When Trump was elected, I really hoped there wouldn't be any significant epidemic or pandemic threat this nation would face during his term given his poor understanding of outbreak science, the ability to manage large scale ID events & constantly undermining public health.
I have significant concerns of Trump prematurely ending his home isolation period & resuming gatherings
First, its mind boggling how he’s intentionally endangering the lives of the same people he swore to protect
Second, his complete & utter disregard of public health guidance
“A new skin infection seemingly never detected before in the US has been detected in at least two patients in New York City…The recently emerged infection found in NYC is described as a drug-resistant fungus that's caused severe skin infections”
“There have been no COVID-19 outbreaks in San Francisco schools since students and educators went back into classrooms on Aug. 16…noting that about 90% of children ages 12 to 17 are fully vaccinated.”

“Why Are So Many of My Fellow Health Workers Unvaccinated?” covers not only the importance of vaccinating healthcare workers but the need to keep the conversation going
A brief thread on a bit more insight 🧵
The COVID19 vaccines offer long term hope but with little impact on the short term
We’re in & continue to head towards the worst chapter of this pandemic
🏠Stay home if you can
😷Wear a mask
↔ Stay 6 feet apart
🚫Avoid crowds
🚫Avoid poorly ventilated spaces
🖐Wash your hands
We celebrated my baby girls 1st birthday yesterday
Wish I could say the year flew by
She won’t remember but her mama cut her maternity leave short & went back to work 1 week after her delivery to help prepare the healthcare system for COVID
Looking forward to better days ahead
As someone who tested positive for COVID19 & even after resolution of symptoms 3 wks later, I still tested positive. It’s important to note detecting viral RNA via PCR does not necessarily mean that infectious virus is present. The duration of viral shedding is quite variable.
This is really important on vax. So many folks are tweeting on this & not really understanding the nuances here
Nothing to worry about - this actually indicates safety measures are being followed/in place
FYI - Over 40% of vaccines actually fail phase 3 for many reasons
My bottom line is that when this happens it gives me more confidence in the vaccine, not less. And in our scientific process. And it encourages me to be patient so we can see what the data tell us.
I’ve been mistaken for a Persian, Brazilian, Latino and Arab. Today was a new for me, I was asked while shopping with a mask covering half my face if I was Punjabi
Loving the diversity of ethnicities/backgrounds
For the record, my dad’s Indian, mom Pakistani & I was born in NY

A recent MMWR which analyzed more than 40,000 pregnancies, adds to the evidence that COVID-19 vaccination is safe during pregnancy.
If you’re pregnant or thinking of getting pregnant, get vaccinated against Covid-19.
“More than 443,000 people in the United States have died of Covid-19 since the pandemic began about a year ago. About 22% of those deaths -- more than 95,000 -- were reported in January”

Oftentimes, when I go on live TV, the comments and messages I receive afterwards from viewers via email, social media posts/messages/tweets are:
50% on my physical appearance
50% on what I have to say
Sexism is more prevalent than one may think.
Any mask is better than no mask.
Whether it’s a cloth mask, surgical mask, KN94/95, or N95 respirator.
But not all masks are created equal.
The benefit of higher quality masks is better protection, especially with higher transmissible variants now circulating.

Dr
@MonicaGandhi9
and I break it down in our latest
@BelferCenter
op ed:
So great to hear the Moderna vaccine is 94.5% effective against coronavirus. Any good news is so welcomed. But our reliance on getting this information through a press release without seeing data needs to change.
To stop mutations, quite simply, we need to stop the spread of SARS-CoV-2 in general.
“If the virus isn’t replicating, it can’t mutate. And if it can’t mutate, the new variants can’t emerge”
@angie_rasmussen
"We’ve demonstrated conclusively that saving nearly everyone who dies of the flu is within our power, to do nothing now-to return to the~30k deaths-a-year status quo w/out even trying to save some of those lives—would seem irresponsible. So what do we do?”
The
#DeltaVariant
and other variants of concern serve as a reminder of how important it is to vaccinate as many people, as quickly as possible
The more the virus spreads, the greater the likelihood of newer variant emergence that threatens vaccine induced and natural immunity 🧵
Many are experiencing “caution fatigue” a natural reaction “to prolonged stress that leaves us feeling worn out and less motivated to adhere to safety guidelines” but the threat of
#COVID19
is real, ongoing and widespread. We must not let down our guard.

It’s important to tease out incidental COVID19 cases vs those patients who are primarily being admitted due to COVID19.
But a hospital bed being used regardless of “for COVID” or “with COVID” still uses hospital resources & a rise in overall hospitalization remains disruptive
The nation needs a crash course on basic infection control and prevention. In all the epidemics we’ve faced, it’s always been
#backtobasics
and building it up from there.
1,203,336 confirmed

Yet, the White House winds down its task force to fight the disease.
Let that sink in.
