Whatever the future of games looks like, content will always be king. But it’s going to be a lot harder to get good content if subscription becomes the dominant model and a select group gets to decide what goes to market and what not. Direct from developer to players is the way.

how do you balance trusting yourself with knowing that you (as a human) have biases and cognitive distortions built into your psychology that can make your perception of reality untrustworthy?

A “False Karass" is a group affiliation based on arbitrary factors, or through a bureaucratic structure. This more prevalent social group is described by Vonnegut as a Granfalloon.  It looks like a team, but is meaningless in terms of how the universe actually gets things done.
