A few evenings later they were walking towards a cinema in the city centre when a man stopped and laughed at Jack, and Jack laughed back, and the man said: "It won't be long now, fella."

Gradually the waiting began to feel less like waiting and more like this was simply what life was: the distracting tasks undertaken while the thing you are waiting for continues not to happen.

Once, when I was nineteen, I gave my father a Father's Day card meant for uncles and neighbors. 'You've Been Like a Father to Me,' it read.

As a first semester freshman, I took a course where we read the entirety of Proust’s In Search of Lost Time. The class had a dozen students, and some weeks we read around 500 pages. There are still students who want college experiences like that but it’s fewer every year.

When it comes to the hermeneutical work of isolating what an author really thought, we’re probably not obliged to consider everything that they did publish but we’re certainly not entitled to ignore everything that they didn’t.
