But it gets weird when we look at the wip. Every rough brushstroke has its own artefact. Even the marks in the retouched area look different from the retouching. its quite clear the marks where added after the retouching.

In my former job I had to look at digital paintings, sketches, etc. And verify if it was made in a legit way. Fraud detection as you will. And check if it is not traced, the WIP's made sense etc.
My one tip is, do not fake WIPS. Its beyond easy to tell if the wip was painted

Every image is compressed, and it creates a compression artefact. Usually that compression artefact is quite uniformal
Here you can see what the compression artefacts look one something that I straight rendered. There is a certain uniformity at work.
