CPTPP meeting wraps up in Melbourne. Unsurprisingly, zero joy for China or Taiwan. Their bids to join pact still going nowhere. CPTPP pushing ahead instead with applications from Costa Rica, Indonesia, Uruguay, UAE, Philippines. Farrell says discussions on others will "continue"

pub trivia is one of the biggest scams out there. You think the pub is hosting it because they're dedicated to the pursuit and celebration of knowledge? Think again. It's all a ploy to get you to stay longer and buy more meals and more drinks. And we all just go along with it.

They've updated it, but they have reported the error as the Thai army's "claim" without quoting Bernama's clarification. Pretty misleading framing.

Cambodianess, one of the better English-language Cambodian news sites, has reported on the correction in full. There is no byline on the article, a possible result of the febrile state of public opinion in the country right now:

The Phnom Penh Post has noted the change, but says it is unclear "whether the minister misspoke or was misquoted, or whether other forces were at play behind the edit." (Bernama stated earlier that it was a mistranslation.)

Quite a thing to get wrong, given the current climate. Not holding my breath that the Khmer Times will update its story:

Interesting. Despite the earlier mistranslation, the Malaysian FM is also saying the latest landmine incident on the #Cambodia-#Thailand border involved a new munition.

Shocking mistake! Bernama, Malaysian National News Agency, publishes an apology for reporting a mistranslation quoting the Malaysian Foreign Minister as saying, "But the ASEAN observer teams in Thailand and Cambodia have reported that they were not new landmines." The original

Sad thing is majority of Thais & Cambodians are ready to believe without an iota of doubt in whatever their gov't tell them—that the other side shot first yest. If you were neither Thai nor Cambodian, you would likely try to consider evidence from both sides. #ThailandCambodia

I'm still puzzled about whether the worst stylistic traits of AI generated text ("it's not X, it's Y," etc) are "baked in" to the LLMs, or simply reflect what the people who designed these systems think good writing is.

I've always been baffled by this policy. Why is it fine to get loaded between 11am and 2, but not between 2 and 5? Midnight to 11am is also stupid, though I imagine this will be widely ignored in Bangkok's night districts.

Thailand’s new alcohol law bans drinking during restricted hours (midnight–11 a.m., 2–5 p.m.) with a 10,000-baht fine. Officials say the first year is a transition period focusing on public education, not punishment. 🍻⚖️ #Thailand #AlcoholLaw #PublicHealth

I was skeptical of the Oct 26 "KL Peace Accord," given that its primary motivation was to give Trump a peace agreement over which he could preside. But I didn't expect things to unravel this quickly. #Cambodia #Thailand
