In some temples in villages.They do have pooje by localites,.But villages and visitors mostly have to fund - even for deepadenenne hoovu naivedya or other workers/ cleaners. ASI would rather spend on maintaining lawns there in such temples.

And they don’t allow minor modifications or improvements nor any puja utsavas thus not living temples.

If it’s a living temple, there is much less respect for history/ preservation like many inscriptions wither away or marked with oils or bit cemented or painted. The vice versa is true too.In architectural historic or ASi temples, they are viewed with tourism/ maintenance.

Like lot visit Banashankari Badami with long queues, but the Chalukya group there or at aihole are relatively much less crowded.

This is in general true. Most of the Hoysala temples except the main two don’t draw crowd unless they are interested to visit for art and architecture ( the common bhaktas).Also kings have built many grand temples- they have not become tirtha ksetras.
Gangaikonda cholapuram isn’t a vibrant pilgrimage center like say Palani, Tiruvannakoil, Madurai or Srirangam. Being old and grand doesn’t make something important from a religious standpoint. Many nondescript and unremarkable temples are v v important Divya desams or Padal Petra.
