Some of us misunderstand our role as parent of a teen. We're not the warden, judge, or punisher. Adolescents need us to support their autonomy. They need to make their own decisions and make mistakes and figure things out. They need us to listen and empathize and remain calm.

Genuine respect is never gained through intimidation, control or disrespect. Often, parents conflate fear, intimidation and "obedience" with respect. Not true. At some point, they WILL rebel. Don't wait for that to happen. #parentingteens.

Part of them still wants to do the "little kid" things with the family. But the part that needs to be accepted by their peers is much more insistent. Just remember, we're here to support their autonomy and guide them to adulthood, not make them feel guilty. #parentingteens

Yep, they're stinkier and hairier but they're still your baby! And they're having a hard time with managing their emotions because that's how an adolescent's brain is wired. They're not doing it on purpose. They want to be calm but they need your help. So remain calm and listen!
