Renter, policy advocate, DFL-endorsed candidate, survivor of police violence. Running for City Council in Ward 8 to create a kinder, safer Minneapolis. he/him
Hello! My name is Soren Stevenson. I'm the DFL endorsed candidate running in Ward 8. I'm a renter, a policy advocate, and a survivor of police violence. Rank me, Soren Stevenson, first on your ballot by November 7th! Get involved and donate:
My name is Soren Stevenson and I’m excited to announce my run for Minneapolis City Council in Ward 8! I’m running to fight for transformational change toward the kinder, safer Minneapolis we all deserve.
Thank you Ward 8! I am honored to have this endorsement. It's clear that Ward 8 is ready for new leadership to bring about real transformational change. I can't wait to keep working with all of you towards a kinder, safer Minneapolis.
The officer who shot me is still on the force. So is the officer who killed Amir Locke. We haven’t seen the accountability from this police department we desperately need. I survived my encounter with MPD. Not everyone can say the same.
I’m a policy advocate, a renter, and a survivor of police violence. Like many of you, when George Floyd was murdered I took to the streets in peaceful protest for justice. In response, an MPD officer shot me in the face. I lost my left eye.
The results are in! And I am thrilled to announce that the majority of committed delegates in the Ward 8 DFL caucus support
@sorenmpls
! Thank you to all the Ward 8 residents, volunteers and supporters that have made this possible.
🧵 Yesterday the Star Tribune Editorial Board endorsed my opponent and there was never any question whether they would. This is because the establishment is scared of the progressive movement that is pushing for a city that works for everyone, not just the corporate elites.
It’s not just MPD that needs transformational change. Minneapolis is becoming more and more unaffordable to live in. Our unhoused neighbors are having their shelter and belongings destroyed instead of being offered the services they need. We need rent control and housing for all.
Our Indigenous neighbors in East Phillips are fighting for control over their health and dignity in their neighborhood. Just last night, Native leaders were arrested for occupying the Roof Depot to prevent its demolition. That should not have happened. I stand with them.
The City must stop the cruel and expensive practice of evicting encampments. I stand with East Phillips, Little Earth and Wall of Forgotten Native neighbors in their demands!
It's all connected. The demands from Wall of Forgotten Natives press conference today:
- housing first policy
- culturally responsive care and treatment
- replication of programs that work (for example, AVIVO)
- creation of a navigation center
1/2
Today, despite years of outcry and negotiation from Little Earth and East Phillips community members, the Minneapolis City Council voted to move forward with the demolition of the East Phillips Roof Depot. I am extremely disappointed by the City Council’s refusal to listen 🧵1/5
We need a kinder, safer city. Current leadership isn’t making that happen. I hope you’ll join me in fighting for a Minneapolis that works for all of us. If you’re able to donate, you can here. I’m looking forward to meeting you and earning your support!
We as neighbors demanded justice in 2020, and we are still demanding justice today. Back then it was for George Floyd, today it's for Ricky Cobb II. The arch of the moral universe is long, and we are bending it towards justice. I'm grateful to be a part of this community!
“Everyone deserves a fair wage, food on the table, clean air, and to make it home safe at the end of the day. Soren Stevenson has demonstrated the kind of grit, perseverance, and care that it takes to create a kinder, safer Ward 8.
What happened yesterday at the Ward 10 convention is unacceptable. My thoughts are with council member Aisha Chughtai and community members that were targeted with violence and had to experience such a traumatic event.
Today was horrifying, unacceptable, and indicative of the growing threat to progressive, pro-people candidates and movement leaders.
See my campaign’s statement on the violence perpetrated by the Nasri Warsame campaign at the Ward 10 convention today.
I am thrilled to be endorsed by Representative and Ward 8 neighbor
@RepAishaGomez
, and council member
@aishaforward10
. I deeply admire both of their leadership and work!
I am thrilled to share that Council Member Robin Wonsley has endorsed my campaign for City Council in Ward 8! I have long admired her work in our community and in office, and I look forward to working with her towards our shared vision for Minneapolis
I fully support bringing back Open Streets Nicollet and would love to see the reopening of Nicollet coincide with Open Streets Nicollet! If elected, I am committed to partnering with
@OurStreetsMpls
to help make this happen
It’s shameful that this vote took place on Eid, while 3 council members were absent on this sacred day for our Muslim neighbors. City leadership has the responsibility to create an inclusive and democratic process, and today failed to do that.
We’re grateful that Ward 8 delegates endorsed our campaign. We know they chose our campaign because of our shared vision for a kinder, safer Minneapolis. We are honored to know the community sees their values reflected in our campaign.
For the past few months, I have been attending the monthly Reimagine George Floyd Square meetings held at Sabathani. These meetings have been both a rewarding and frustrating process.
“I am thrilled to support Soren Stevenson to be the next ward 8 city council representative! Soren is smart, kind, and deeply knowledgeable. It’s time to make Minneapolis a national leader in housing and community safety.
Ricky Cobb II should be alive today. My heart is with the family members and community that are grieving another tragic killing of Black man by police in Minnesota.
We're officially on the ballot! Today I filed to run as the DFL endorsed candidate for Minneapolis City Council in Ward 8. I am excited to work together to build the kinder, safer city that we deserve!
This is heartbreaking. My thoughts are with the family and community that are grieving the tragic loss and injuries. Everyone in our a city, no matter what we look like or who we love, deserves to feel safe.
Today is Election Day! Ward 8, let's vote! Make sure to rank Soren Stevenson 1st on your ballot! Polls are open today from 7am to 8pm. You can find your polling site here: — it may have moved with redistricting so double check!
The kinder, safer City that we want and we deserve is possible with new council leadership that is ready to face the headwinds and demand a better contract. I am ready to be that councilperson. Link to full statement:
Polls are closed! Thank you Ward 8! This campaign has been truly rooted in community, and today was no different. Join us to celebrate our hard work to win a kinder, safer Minneapolis at Los Andes Latin Bistro, 607 W Lake St
WE DID IT
After a decade of organizing and resistance, EPNI will finally be buying the Roof Depot site. To everyone who has joined us in this fight, thank you.
I’m excited for the endorsement of
@TwinCitiesDSA
! I am looking forward to building a multiracial, working class solidarity movement together and a kinder, safer city for all
@sorenmpls
marched in the George Floyd Uprising and lost an eye to a police-fired rubber bullet. In a city that has long neglected the needs of residents while protecting corporations and violent police, he’s running for kinder, safer Mpls.
Exiting the Ward 8 DFL caucus, I am excited to say that for the past several weeks I have lead with the majority of committed delegates for the DFL convention and I am currently neck-and-neck with council-president Andrea Jenkins. Stay tuned for the final results from the caucus!
We will not bow to corporate bullying! It is high time for the City to pass legislation increasing wages and worker protections for Uber and Lyft workers to be in line with our minimum wage. Urge your city council member and the mayor to stand with workers!
Minneapolis is not meeting the basics of public safety. My neighbors and I agree, we need a comprehensive plan so that everyone feels safe in our city. City leadership has failed to meet our safety needs or even have a comprehensive plan.
Team Soren is having a blast getting out the vote in Ward 8 for a kinder, safer Minneapolis! Polls are open until 8pm, if you need a ride let us know! We are door-knocking and phone-banking until polls close, stop by our office at 5 E 38th St any time if you can help!
“Our strong mayor system requires the Council be an effective legislative branch. Soren won't be a rubber stamp." -
@dbrauer
Ward 8 resident and former journalist
No. ... The Mayor's priority has been protecting the interests of corporations and the wealthy rather than improving the lives of the residents of Minneapolis."
"Soren has the sorts of visions for the future of Minneapolis that make me excited to live here. His background in housing and desire to make Minneapolis more affordable for working class citizens speaks to the way that he cares about people, not just buzzwords.
Team Soren is out in force to get out the vote in Ward 8 this weekend! From Bancroft, to Lyndale and Kingfield, it’s clear that we are ready for a kinder, safer Minneapolis!
It's been a busy couple of weeks for me and my campaign, and I want to thank everyone who has supported so far. We had a wonderful kick-off to my campaign featuring powerful speeches from
@robin4mpls
, Ward 8 resident Lena K. Gardner and more!
Solidarity with
@sewardcoop
workers! Yesterday I joined workers at the Friendship store that are demanding better pay and protections. Unfortunately management has walked out of bargaining.
We are so excited to be out in Ward 8 today talking to neighbors about the issues that matter most in this important election! Thank you
@TwinCitiesDSA
and
@ydsaumn
for joining us!
I am excited to be endorsed by
@SierraClub
! We are in a climate crisis that threatens all of us. My neighbors and I know that we need to take bold action to make a resilient, climate change-ready city and to address environmental racism in our city.
Yesterday was packed with events about some of the issues that matter most to Ward 8. I attended
@mpls4RC
Renters Assembly: 3% Rent Cap, NO Corporate Loopholes! Alongside other candidates for city council.
We have been busy talking with neighbors and connecting with community members about our shared vision for a kinder, safer Minneapolis. It's clear that Ward 8 is ready for new leadership!
Yesterday I joined Starbucks workers on the picket lines that are striking for better wages and respect on the job. Starbucks needs to stop retaliating against workers that are unionizing and start treating our neighbors that are fighting for a better community with respect.
I am proud to be endorsed by
@MFT59
! I know that educators and public schools are vital to our communities and I am excited to work alongside teachers and educators for a kinder, safer Minneapolis
MFT is proud to announce our endorsed candidates for City Council! Our City Council Members make decisions every day that impact our students, families, and members. We're excited to endorse these candidates who will fight for a more just Minneapolis.
“I'm not too concerned with the dynamic of which team folks are on," Stevenson said. "I'm running on shared values with my neighbors … and my neighbors have said loud and clear they want to see a change in leadership."
We had a great time yesterday with
@TwinCitiesDSA
and
@robin4mpls
talking to neighbors in Kingfield! In Ward 8 we are aligned and energized to build the kinder, safer Minneapolis that we deserve.
The Ward 8 DFL Convention is this Saturday, May 20th, and our team wants to make sure all delegates have a positive, safe, and welcoming experience at the endorsing convention. Full statement:
“For example, when asked by the Star Tribune whether "Frey is doing a good job," Stevenson, who's challenging Jenkins in one of the most closely watched races, responded, in part:
🧵 It’s high time that Minneapolis pass legislation to protect the basic rights of Uber and Lyft workers. These drivers are doing essential work that keeps our city functioning. Yet often drivers make far below the wages they need to support themselves and their families.
On Saturday, we were excited to be joined by
@RepAishaGomez
and
@aishaforward10
. They spoke to what is at stake in this important election. The housing crisis in Minneapolis is only escalating and our communities need us to take real, immediate action.
I spent the past few days with
@gfgmemorial
and community members at the Rise and Remember Festival events mourning George Floyd and lives stolen by police, and celebrating our communities. I am so grateful to be a part of this resilient and powerful community
Ward 8, tomorrow is Election Day! Polls open from 7am to 8pm, find your polling location here: We cannot wait for the kinder, safer city that we deserve! We still need your help to reach every Ward 8 neighbor!
Tonight I attended the Community Listening Session on Safety & Livability on Public Transit hosted by
@MplsWard9
It is clear that public transit is a vital asset in our community and that our public safety, public health, and housing systems are not keeping us safe.
On this Indigenous People's Day, I stand in solidarity with our indigenous neighbors. I know that truly standing with our indigenous communities will look like a lot of different important work.
It’s hypocritical of Minneapolis leadership that this vote took place on Eid, while 3 Muslim council members (including two bill authors) were absent. We think of ourselves as an inclusive city, but today’s vote was not that.
We are excited to announce that team Soren officially has an office! We are excited to have our own space to host phone-banks, kick off door-knocks, host meetings and more!
Exiting the Ward 8 DFL caucus, I am excited that the majority of committed delegates support Soren! Join me on Tuesday, April 11th at 6pm at 4200 Cedar Ave S for a celebration and fundraiser!
10 days to Election Day and we are so excited to rank Soren Stevenson first for a kinder, safer Minneapolis! Early voting is now open at 980 E Hennepin Ave, Monday-Friday 7am-6pm and Saturdays and Sundays 9am-3pm.
Neighbors in Ward 8 are united on this, we want everyone to have an affordable place to live. We want our friends and neighbors who rent to be able to stay in their homes. There are few things we care more about than everyone having a place to live.
Join me at Butter Bakery Cafe this Saturday at 11:30am! I look forward to meeting you and talking about the issues that matter most to the people of Ward 8!
A Minneapolis police officer who pepper-sprayed a Vice News reporter during the 2020 unrest was on path to be fired for "unethical and egregious" action.
"I am proud to endorse Soren With Ward 8 for Minneapolis city council. I have worked with Soren on issues regarding Police Brutality and in our conversations and friendship I have discussed with him many issues regarding environmental justice, health equity, and housing.
"I believe Soren will stand against the tendency to compromise our values and will speak up when decisions are not equitable. Soren is committed to getting things done, but not at the cost of hurting our ward or environmental justice across the city.
Exiting the successful DFL convention, we can’t wait to talk to talk to more Ward 8 neighbors! Join us on and
@TwinCitiesDSA
on June 3rd at 1pm to door-knock Ward 8 neighbors and talk about the issues that matter most to us in this important election!
I am excited for the endorsement of
@minnesota_faith
! It is clear that across Ward 8 there is broad agreement on the need for a strong rent stabilization, bold action against climate change, the need for community rooted governance
🧵The Department of Justice and Global Rights for Women have published back-to-back reports that tell us what we already know: Minneapolis Police have a pattern and practice of discriminating against Black people, Native people, women, and LGBTQ people.
The Justice Department accused Minneapolis police Friday of engaging in a pattern of violating constitutional rights and discriminating against Black and Native American people following an investigation prompted by the killing of George Floyd.
I applaud
@aishaforward10
and her team for their leadership and for representing the community. I condemn the violent and intimidatory acts of Nasri Warsame’s campaign. We deserve a kinder, safer city and yesterday’s violent acts do not reflect our communities vision for our city
My thoughts are with our Muslim neighbors in the face of these horrifying attacks. I condemn the repeated attacks on our Muslim neighbors houses of worship. These hate crimes are an abomination in our city and state.
St. Paul Mosque
Tawhid Islamic Center of Minnesota
430 dale street north St Paul Minnesota 55103
Around eight this morning, the mosque was fully burnt. Fire and police on the scene 6 attack against a mosque in Minnesota. 3 in the last 4 weeks.
Happy Labor Day! My neighbors and I know how crucial the labor movement is to thriving communities and for the kinder, safer Minneapolis that we deserve. I will always be an outspoken advocate for workers rights and unions!
"An off-year election typically has a lower voter turnout, Schultz said. So the winner may be decided by whichever candidate is better at old-fashioned grassroots campaign techniques like door knocking and phone banking"
🧵 “I truly believe that if not for the city’s failure to hold MPD accountable and ban no-knock warrants as promised, my son would still be here…As is often the case, the mayor’s words failed to match his actions.” - Andre Locke
I am excited for the endorsements of Commissioner
@BeckyForParksD3
and Commissioner
@OlsenForParks
! Our public parks and green spaces are Minneapolis treasures and make our city the place we know and love.
Just 5 days to Election Day and the support for our community-driven campaign keeps growing! I am excited to be recognized by
@MomsDemand
as a Gun Sense Candidate. I am ready to be a leader for change to address all the issues harming our communities, including gun violence.
“Ward 8 deserves a city council member guided by a strong moral compass that points toward equity. Someone who shares the progressive vision our community has been asking for. We all deserve a city that’s kind, just and loving, and I think Soren can help us get there.”
Seven years ago,
@sorenmpls
was home in Oregon with plans to become a doctor
How Stevenson wound up in Minneapolis, lost an eye protesting police, and decided to launch a bid to unseat a trailblazing City Council incumbent:
📝
@kystokes
City leadership has been hard at work betraying our shared values this week, and it’s only Wednesday! From rejecting the needs of workers who are being exploited by giant corporations to continuing the cruel and expensive practice of encampment sweeps instead of housing first.
I was excited to join UPS workers at the
@Teamsters638
Practice Picket this weekend! Unions are crucial to thriving communities. I am ready to stand in solidarity with UPS workers if they strike
