Brian Wilson passed away yesterday. I've long admired his music. Pet Sounds is one of my desert island albums. I saw him perform in Coney Island and at the Hollywood Bowl. But this phone call, this tiny act of kindness, might've been the most powerful note he ever played for me.

I think I asked what his favorite concert had been. He mentioned one of the big ones, maybe Live 8? I can't quite remember. After a minute or two, he said, "Well, Dan, I gotta move on. Great to chat with you.". And that was it. A brief, humble gesture from a musical legend.
