Normally quitting and relaunching Excel should have auto-reopened this file, but it didn't. I would have needed to get it manually. So ... +

That directory is [user] > Library > Application Support > Microsoft > Office > Office 2011 Autorecovery, but [user] can't see library. +

Spotlight and Finder would not locate the file; turns out its location was unindexed. But Excel's Save As pointed me to the directory. +

Mac Office users: I had a file disappear on me today, then spent two hours recreating it ... and then, once done, I found the original. +
