Sotomayor's dissent is also very striking -- especially in returning to the question of dignity that animated Justice Kennedy in the Obergefell decision. It is powerful to read but also reminded me of Jeffrey Rosen's 2015 essay on dignity's limits

The same court that abolished affirmative action yesterday because it pretends to believe affirmative action allows unconstitutional discrimination based on race is perfectly fine with discrimination based on sexuality.

What seems clear is that the majority sees Christian rights of free expression as more important to protect than other groups

The majority opinion specifically positions state interest in making public accommodations to protect stigmatized groups against the right of free speech/free expression

It seems important that the SCOTUS decision on religion and LGBTQ protections needs to reach back to Boy Scouts v Dale, the 2000 case that upheld the right of the Boy Scouts to exclude gay people as a right of free expression, rather than Masterpiece Cakeshop
