1/ It was only a matter of time before a politician in this election campaign argued that we learn from other countries and rewrite the way the NHS is funded to resolve its many problems. Here's me on why we should stop idealising other systems, France or otherwise:.

🆕 Following a suggestion in this election campaign that the #NHS needs a French-style funding model, @sjanereed argues that big bang reform would be a politically and operationally expensive way to entirely miss the point.

Some thoughts here on what the NHS gets wrong that other systems seem to get right when it comes to resilience and moving care from hospital into the community: .

When asked what surprised him most in the Darzi review @wesstreeting reflects on two things: . 1) just how exposed we were to the pandemic compared to other countries because of the weaknesses we had going into it; & 2) how hospital centric the NHS is compared to other systems

11/ There's no question that waiting times are a shared challenge across countries, even if the degree of that challenge differs. We hope this analysis helps ask questions about why some other systems have been able to recover more quickly, and what it might take to improve.

10/ We also know that both orthopedic and ophthalmic care are areas where the NHS relies extensively on the independent sector to boost capacity -- so increasing private sector on its own likely won’t be enough to make up for these differences. see:

The role of private providers in supporting the NHS is often hotly debated, so how is health care split between the NHS and the private sector and is it changing as a result of the pandemic? In this...

9/ This is very different to cataract surgeries, that often can be performed with a day admission using only local anesthetic and are therefore far easier to scale. (Good work from @HealthFdn looking at these differences: .

8/ We also know these haven’t been the areas where the UK has tended to direct its health spend, despite years of policy strategy of trying to shift more care out of hospital. (More here from @sallygainsbury + colleagues on where our NHS £ goes .

7/ Bringing down these waiting times will require all parts of the system to work together, including post-operative rehabilitation and community support where we know that the NHS has struggled relative to other countries. See:

6/ So how we do make sense of this mixed picture, and what does it tell us about recovery plans moving forward?. We know that orthopedic surgeries can be intensive procedures that can require hospital stays, rehabilitation, and ongoing support in the community.

5/ But when looking at cataract surgeries, we see almost the opposite. Here waiting times have been less affected by the pandemic, and have improved over time, and we’re among the top performers of the countries we looked at.
