After a talk, someone asked Jeff Kimble, "If you can come back to life 100 years from now, what would be your first question?". Jeff's answer was, "How's my family?"—probably not what most were expecting. He had science questions too, but those ones I forgot. Vale, Jeff Kimble.
Jeff Kimble 1949-2024. An extraordinary pioneer of quantum information science and a great friend who inspired me in many ways. Jeff's wise counsel made me a better scientist and a better person.

I know semi-device-independent is controversial (where do you draw the line?). But, something like a Bell-test without needing random settings—yes!. Thanks to @physorg_com for the feature.

In a new Physical Review Letters study, scientists have successfully presented a proof of concept to demonstrate a randomness-free test for quantum correlations and non-projective measurements,...

Hear, hear! A touch of intellectual humility makes collaborations more effective and fun. Thanks to @bradmoggo for bringing an Australian context.#academia. Also, cheers to @Nature for featuring two Filipinos here, great to see visibility improving.

Queensland released the #Queensland Quantum and Advanced Technologies Strategy today. It's funding for #quantumscience #quantumtechnologies #STEM, hooray!.

Hot off the press, we demonstrate quantum correlations without need for a random input (Alice and Bob does not need to choose settings randomly). Also, OAM entanglment from SPDC---it's the gift that keeps on giving : ).

It is super heartbreaking that we are such a long way away from equity. Visas have always been one big hurdle for students with passports from the developing world. This kind of discrimination should stop, educate case officers better. @USEmbassyPH.
My PhD student who was selected by @OpticaWorldwide to attend its 2023 Student Leadership conference got denied a visa by the @USEmbassyPH . It breaks my heart seeing excellent and highly motivated students getting this road block. (1/3).

For my #writing workshop today, I asked my "Introduction to Science Research" students why we (humans) write. I got some good answers, but these two made me laugh 😄

For a dose of inspiration @4womeninscience. Prof Lidia Morawska from @QUT is donating all of her prize (100k euros) for a perpetual scholarship---coolness! I wish there is more coverage of her win here in Australia! #fwis25.
Proud to reveal our 2023 international laureates in Physical sciences, Mathematics, Computer science. . For 25 years, with @UNESCO, the #ForWomenInScience International Awards have highlighted women scientists for their exceptional careers & their contributions to the world.

For #IWD2023, I am sharing a photo of a pregnant me doing stuff in the lab, #EmbraceEquity. I also just heard that the first woman PhD student in my group has been granted a visa to come to AU, hooray! Happy International Women's Day indeed : )

There is a chance to get some airtime for student visa issues tonight at Q+A. A PhD student in my group has been waiting for 8 months (!!!) for a visa. I am sure I am not the only one. Ask a question here #AUacademia:.

Vale, Rodney Loudon. The Rank Prize symposium of 2011 that he last chaired is still my favourite meeting of all time. Thanks for leaving us with "The Quantum Theory of Light". @rankprize

Have you heard the advice "do something at the edge of your current capabilities"? That's this arXiv paper for me 😅 Hooray! Thanks to @marcotomamichel @bcsanders @YingkaiOuyang @quantum_minhsiu and Kaumudi!.

My great pleasure to collaborate with @FUTURUMCareers, they have excellent, FREE, resources for aspiring scientists, and for their teachers. Check it out! Also check the one featuring me, there's some great advice there, if I may say so myself : ). @UQscience @ARC_EQUS @UQ_SMP.
At @UQscience, Assoc. Prof. @sinag_jacq is untangling the physics behind #quantum #entanglement. Learn how her research is advancing quantum technologies and helping to develop the quantum internet:

Tip: For PhD supervisors in Australia whose international students are experiencing incredible delays (~9 months?!) in visa processing, you can fill out a Form 956 and be able to inquire about the visa. Took me an hour to get that tip, use it #AUacademia .

Definitely one of the highlights of my 2022, listening to Donna Strickland—a Nobel winner who makes you feel like you can win a Nobel prize too, super inspiring. (I usually take good pictures of my group, but apparently not when they are with a Nobel winner 😅) @ARC_EQUS

What is quantum? I don't have words, so I show a Picasso artwork instead. Thanks to the wonderful people at @UQ_SMP and @UQscience for organising our alumni event. (If you have an answer to the question, comment away!)

This one resonates, with a Filipino passport, I would spend days preparing visa applications (yes, you show your personal. bank accounts for the last 3 months or so). This one is a good education thread 👇🏾.
Whenever academics in conferences give talks on addressing inequity in academia, I find they rarely touch on one of the more glaring examples of it: the academic conference itself. 1/🧵.

Here is a great thread for those treading or planning to tread academia and parenthood. Thanks @S_FrankeArnold, for the thread, and for the inspiration! #Academia.
Today I talked to our @GlasgowWiP community at @UofGlasgow on parenthood in academia. The majority of researchers in academia will have children - but we rarely talk about it. Here's a summary:
