7/ The fundamentals of a virtual world are data, presence and persistence. A representation of the real world's data, where people have a presence, and it is always on, doesn't reset every time you visit. And all at a scale to support all of humanity and our information.

6/ A virtual world doesn't necessarily have to be visual and need goggles. One could argue we should maybe start with the foundations and add three dimensions later.

5/ The term "metaverse" was not invented by Facebook. It's from the book Snow Crash by Neil Stephenson in 1982. The concept of virtual worlds are also not new and come in many forms. See True Names, Neuromancer, Tron, Otherland, MUDs, Second Life.

4/ Yes there can and should be a commercial aspect. Just like the internet.

3/ And like the internet it should be built and contributed to, and hosted by everyone, on open source technology.

2/ It has to be a collective global utility. Just like the internet.

1/ It cannot and should not be "owned" by a single company. Its should not be a corporate initiative.
