In the latest Frugal Architect episode we talk with @BoyanSlat about @TheOceanCleanup's mission to remove 90% of ocean plastic by 2040. The key lesson: start simple and let the mission guide your engineering. When you're on the right path, solutions get simpler over time.

When 16-year-old Boyan Slat encountered more plastic bags than fish in Greek waters, he asked a simple question that would change everything: "Why can't we just clean this up?" From €200 in pocket...

I designed and built (with a great team) a very large scale one of these ‘database per resource’ designs just over a decade ago. They have a ton of nice properties (low blast radius, great scalability), but also introduce a lot of complexity (e.g. finding the right database).

@iavins This can be a good approach (e.g. see our 2020 paper “Millions of Tiny Databases”), but has some practical problems: durability is hard unless you sync replicate, you need to find the needle in a haystack of the right DB for the right data.

No data, no AI, no progress. My @AmazonScience article explores how multi-layered mapping + petabyte-scale cloud infrastructure helps save lives in time of crisis. Building AI without addressing the fundamental data divide means solving the wrong problems. https://t.co/vt0LeS1rvg>

The reason for visiting the Amazon was an invitation by @grupoaje who are supporting the communities along the Amazon with guaranteed income. They give the young people an economic future so that they do not leave their villages for the big towns.

I cannot believe it took me 21 years at https://t.co/HCmK8KNIEL to end up on the one and only Amazon. It was absolutely worth the wait.

As developers, we want to create and find new solutions—not port Java 11 apps to 17. Here is a real opportunity with AI tools. First understand your problem, THEN consider solutions. Our data shows that teams using this approach cut costs 15.9% YoY.

Cheap ≠ frugal. This is a lesson Zillow’s Craig Link learned from his dad. Packing lunch, limiting stops on road trips, and on the latest episode of The Frugal Architect, we talk about how these early lessons in frugality made him a better engineer.
