Not to say things should be different! Intellectual exploration for its own sake is a valid calling, not just for math, but so many other areas: physics, philosophy, literature. But it does make you wonder what the world would be like if people focused on real world impact.

Are the brightest minds wasted going into pure mathematics, where work is deeply intellectually rewarding, but lacks any real world impact?. What would the world look like if all of the brilliant mathematicians in the world instead worked on science, engineering, etc.?.
