I trained a sparse autoencoder on the middle layer residual stream of my genome language model and found human-interpretable latent features that consistently detect specific DNA motifs!. 🧵1/8

This feels extremely obvious yet I’ve never considered it before. Fascinating.

Anecdotally, women (or it least myself and the women I know) have a much stronger “thirst” for adventure than the men, who have a greater desire to work 24/7 and stay in one location. I’m a very ambitious, work-oriented person, but I have to work hard to suppress my opposing.

There seems to be a mismatch between mens' perception of womens' desire for comfort and womens' actual comfort requirements. Whenever I post about nomadic living and such, it's always women who seem fascinated and enthralled by it. But the men say: "no woman would do this.". If

". The problem remains that denouncing evil is a far cry from doing good." (Philip Gourevitch in his account of the Rwanda genocide). The picture is of the Monument to the Children at Yad Vashem. The broken-off stone stelae symbolize lives cut short. 3/3.

I think the contrast between the actions that created these paths reveals a difficult truth. You can be passively evil, but you cannot be passively good. Righteousness is not a state of being you can attain by default or accident. You have to choose it everyday. 2/3.

A few years ago, I visited Yad Vashem and walked the Avenue of the Righteous Among the Nations. A few days ago I visited Auschwitz-Birkenau and walked a very different path, from its unloading ramp to what remains of its gas chambers and crematoria. 1/3

People were saying "learn to code" in 2016, you know when Zoomers were picking colleges and their programs.

Which is more plausible: a) that starvation, exploitation and tyranny cause masses to behave in ways that are cruel and irrational, or b) that individuals become part of cruel, retarded, poor masses because they innately possess those qualities?.

Reading a lot of history lately, it's made me:.1. More wary about power, which is very good in principle at removing checks to itself.2. Less sympathetic to the poor masses, which are largely cruel and completely retarded.

I got location depression after moving to San Francisco in the first few months because it was such a stark contrast to the cities I’d previously lived in (Sydney, Melbourne). It’s nice to spend some time in places where the shampoo isn’t locked up.

I’m an Australian spending some time in the UK + Western Europe who also lived in the U.S. for two years and I’m bamboozled by this opinion. The U.S. has the highest salaries but its major cities lose on every other QoL metric (safety, green space, walkability, public amenities).

It’s really shocking visiting the UK. I don’t know what I expected but what I found is what could be at best described as a developing country.

I asked my family if we could watch Holocaust movies all day for my 14th birthday (just to be clear this was for education and remembrance, it wasn’t joyful). I tried to set up a seminar series in the library where I could educate my friends (they did not go for this).

The school principal saw me reading Arendt in the playground and asked if I was Jewish and I had to explain that no, I was just extremely interested in this period of history. I printed off articles and read them when I finished my classwork.

This doesn’t need to be a four-year college degree, but I think it’s very hard to be properly informed with today’s internet + media if you weren’t taught critical thinking, source verification, research skills etc., and I say that as someone from a family with no higher edu.

My hot take is that more people, not less, should be getting a liberal higher education (some science, some history, literature etc), because the fourth estate has collapsed, as has trust in expertise, and a (correctly) informed citizenry is essential for democracy.

The solution to the sf gender imbalance is to put at least two brick and mortar Anthropologie stores and one Free People. I will not comment further.

$90 AUD for three prosciutto sandwiches in Venice. $10 AUD for a can of Coke Zero. You can obviously travel cheaper and just do two minute noodles etc. but eating out abroad is half of the fun.

Almost every Australian I know is in Europe for the northern hemisphere summer but I feel like I’m burning money because the Aus dollar is so weak, how is anyone affording anything? $45 AUD for pub fish and chips in London.
