Averaging the marks wouldn’t work because each sub-skill might not have the same number of points available. (I’m looking at the example on page 266).

Here are my questions: if a student doesn’t attain the basic level, they will get a 0? Won’t this distort the grade? Also, if they can only achieve at a basic level for each sub-skill, that would be a 50% - which is failing.

It would also align with negative exponents representing repeated division (instead of multiplication).

Can we say multiplying by a negative is repeated subtraction? That would make explaining “a negative times a negative” much easier to visualize (repeatedly subtracting a negative results in addition) #iteachmath #mtbos.
