Why do so many brilliant artists also battle their minds? Autism. Bipolar. Schizophrenia. What looks like illness… often unlocks genius. A thread on the strange link between brain disorders and creativity 🧵

A crucial paper about new treatments for people who have #eatingdisorders. I’m so pleased it includes evidence from the I-CBTE model proving that #recoveryispossible. Thank you @DavidViljoenED @AgnesAyton for all you do. Now we must expand and implement this model around the UK.

The ‘new holy grail’ for treating eating disorders. Great to see our I-CBTE case studies cited in this paper on insights and innovations in severe & longstanding ED. https://t.co/55yp7PArYW https://t.co/L5uMlOjhqQ https://t.co/VN6icNsnnh @AgnesAyton @sensinglorna @m_twitchell23

First sightings in Sicily, where I’m giving a talk at Università di Messina, a conference exploring 'genius, madness and creativity'. I present #ACreativeTransformation, my own breakdown, breakthrough and infinite creativity. Expect many pictures. It will be a colourful few days!

The 2nd in the provocative trilogy of papers on #madness, #creativity & #sense I wrote with Roxana Baiasu is out in Italian philosophy journal “Iride”. We find meaning and sense in #madness (both vulnerable and resilient). This is #ACreativeTransformation. https://t.co/l4DCr2L68i

Read 'My #mad visions', new in @IMSJournal. It takes the reader from remnants of my psychosis to brilliant ideas from Foucault, Stiegler & Nietzsche. We understand how art provides care and helps me cope with my hallucinations, as #ACreativeTransformation. https://t.co/mW6fKvMayO

We celebrated the end of #ACreativeTransformation #ACT2 (and hopefully the start of something bigger) at @HeadwaySurrey, screening the powerful, intuitive, raw film we have made—“Art and Nature: Living with a brain injury.” Watch the film, see more here: https://t.co/idwuAEeEQD

The idea that antipsychotics do not provide clinically meaningful benefits in acute treatment of psychosis is so disconnected from scientific & clinical evidence that I consider contorted arguments for it as a proxy for one’s ability to engage in supercharged confirmation bias.

I wrote a new article about alternatives to A&E for mental health which is published in @bmj_latest today. Any shares appreciated!

The NHS recently announced it will open specialist mental health centres as an alternative to A&E. But patients don’t always present with cases that fall neatly into “mental” or “physical” boxes, says @jamesldowns, and this risks reinforcing the divide https://t.co/aRuyHb3GJx

From #ACreativeTransformation at #Coconuts in Leuven, Belgium. An experimental, playful, moving event to launch the new magazine. A treat to see #madness and #philosophy friends. I enjoyed Leuven’s narrow, vertical streets, towering Gothic architecture. Thank you Coconuts 👀🥳🙌

1/2 A patient tells me that the auditory hallucinations are unwanted, distressing, & disabling. He finds the psy-medication to be helpful, with no significant side effects. According to antipsychiatrists I should tell him to avoid the medication because the illness is a blessing

the entire team of staff on the ward, and most of all to the patients for their openness, generosity and immense creativities. I look forward to seeing Mia’s research developing from this project and what happens next. More will follow.

Seeing patients find new ways to express themselves, to form a language, to feel happy—these were the highlights. Now we must look for funding to repeat, roll out and take our model to other Trusts and different settings. I am grateful to Frances, visiting artist at the NHNN,

I've never been grateful for being in hospital for longer than I needed to be. (Mainly because community provision was just not there.) Am I grateful for being 'drugged'? Am I grateful for the doctors that recognised that without admission, I was on a roller coaster that was

It’s almost impossible to fathom the level of brainwashing that must take place for a person to genuinely say: “I’m grateful to my psychiatrist for drugging me. I’m grateful to them for hospitalizing me, or keeping me hospitalized for longer than I wanted to be.” Yet it happens.

#ACreativeTransformation Session 4 at the Neurorehabilitation Unit, @QSNeurosurgery: "Unlocking the Imagination". The learning lesson of today: Let's just paint. That does the magic. Patients began to tell their stories, using oil pastels, watercolour and gouache. What a session.
