Thoroughly enjoyed this earlier today. I’ve loved working with the @DigiPathfinders team and delivering workshops across Newcastle. One attendee today called it the best training they’d been to, so I’ll be dining out on that for a while.
That's a wrap on our digital marketing workshop! 👏 Thank you so much to @scottdigitalco for sharing some fantastic insights to help us to level up our digital marketing and social media strategies.

It’s a mistake to assume that everyone that would want to read your content just happened to be online at the same time as you tweeted it. Reshare. Retweet. Repost. Create once. Distribute forever.

My thoughts on Threads and whether you should bother as a small business. Nope. It’s a bit of a mess right now. Sure it looks good, and posting is easy, but discovery and reach is nigh on impossible for most small businesses.

And that's a wrap! Today I finished a 7ish month project working with @BusinessNland to deliver 1 to 1 marketing coaching to local businesses. It's been around 4 years since I started working with the team, and it feels like the end of an era. Here's what it involved.

So many businesses are posting 2 to 3 times a day because they think that’s good marketing. My response: would you stand in the middle of a networking event and just shout a random phrase about your business every 5 minutes? Why do you think that’s acceptable online?

It’s the first ever Scott Digital Christmas party tonight 🥳 (The business is covering the cost of a meal out for me and my wife as part of an annual staff welfare fund)

Nice to see some coverage of Content Unlocked in one of the local papers earlier this month. T-shirt: model's own. https://t.co/q8VORCGaR8

6/ A lot are falling into the trap of over explaining their offer and trying to hard to make it sound valuable by being obtuse. With one business I asked “why?” every time they explained what they do until I saw the lightbulb come on. “I’ve made it too complicated, haven’t I?”

5/ Others have single page sites trying to appeal to several audiences. I’m helping them build out landing pages for each target market and measure their performance over time.

One business’s website is fully looked after by an overseas agency who ‘specialise’ in their sector. All the content is duplicated across other sites around the country (looked after by the agency), with no internal links, and no real relevance to the local audience they serve.

4/ SEO is a big knowledge gap. Most are confused because they rank well for their business name, then dismayed when they discover they’re invisible for intent based searches. I’m helping them understand Search Console data and how to write for the web.

Some businesses are small cottages or b’n’b places. They’re reliant on third party sites like https://t.co/NC3iSfUCL7 for reservations. For them we’re looking at how we build email lists to encourage them to book direct next time.

3/ There’s next to no uptake in email marketing. One garden centre has a loyalty scheme with customers signed up, which captures spends and products bought. They’ve done nothing with the info. That’s about to change!

A lot of this has centred around establishing posting schedules, stopping people from cross-posting everywhere at the same time, and moving them away from sales/promotion-focused messaging.

2/ Most across the board are seeing big declines in organic engagement on social. We’re revisiting (or creating) their strategy, identifying target customers and where they are. Then discussing the content needed to reach them.
