“When is enough, enough?” 🚨 This is Episode 2 of Dr. Ed’s Words with Dr. Derrick Edwards. Not every call ends a career—but ignoring changes in behavior, personality, or what loved ones notice can. Take the signs seriously. Intervene early. Stay in the game longer.

🧠 Did you know PTSD used to be called nostalgia? In this week’s Words with Dr. Edwards, we trace the long history of trauma, how the symptoms we now label as PTSD were once described during the Civil War as a distracted state that pulled people out of the present.

“Pregnancy doesn’t belong in the fire service.” We hear this too often — and it’s wrong. Family planning is a fire service issue. There’s room for safe pregnancy, fertility support, and light duty. No firefighter should have to choose between the job and a family.

Did you know your immune system starts in your gut and stress has a BIG impact? Firefighters and medics under high stress are more likely to suffer colds, GI issues, and prolonged recovery. 🔄 Stress → Gut damage → Lower immunity → More stress

😴 Sleep is mission-critical—and most of us aren’t getting enough. Stress is a big reason why! Studies show that firefighters average less than 6 hours of sleep post-shift and that chronic sleep debt is a predictor of both burnout and injury.

🔗 Tip to recharge effectively: develop a pre-bed routine (at home and at work), and consistent bedtime pattern that will help provide you with the opportunity for sufficient sleep duration.

Sleep week Day 1 😴. 🔗 Tip: Keep your bedtime & wake-up time as consistent as possible—even on off-duty days. Sleep routines strengthen your body's internal clock, improving sleep quality & helping you recover faster after demanding shifts.

SLEEP HYGIENE & MENTAL HEALTH IN FIREFIGHTERS 💤 Nearly 40% of firefighters suffer from sleep disorders, putting them at higher risk for PTSD, depression, & anxiety. Lack of sleep doesn’t just make you tired, it impacts mental health, increases burnout, & raises suicide risk.

Heart attacks are the #1 cause of on-duty firefighter deaths. 💔 More than 45% of LODDs are due to cardiovascular events—yet many of these are preventable! You can read the entire Better Heart Project Final Report any time at: https://t.co/TbJoKKVaGM
