“Why are students today being taught the same way their parents were? Look at how much everything else has advanced.” First of all, they’re not being taught the same way as their parents. Which is why they’re so behind.

@EduConsumersFdn There's something else that you are not talking about--successful schools organize themselves in ways that teachers can teach and students can learn. Typical schools are not really organized around teaching and learning.

Students who are years behind need intensive instruction, not be told to color until intervention time starts up. Students who are years ahead need intensive instruction, not be told to act as peer tutors and wait until college for real challenge to begin.

This is a symptom of a sector that has been parasitically consumed by a cult of superstition, ideologues, and charlatans. Pop philosophy, pop psychology, pop inspirational futurism. It’s like a religion for dumb people.

How many of you came into teaching thinking it was the perfect job to align with having a family? Same holidays. Home at a sensible time. A career that fitted around family life. Now the biggest group leaving the profession are women aged 30 to 39. That isn’t

Inclusion has become perhaps the most used word in education today. But what’s interesting is how many children aren’t actually ‘included’ in the conversations about inclusion - the quiet, hard working, under the radar, polite, always respectful children who just get on with it

This teacher-turned-cognitive scientist shared a disturbing reality that left the room stunned. “Our kids are LESS cognitively capable than we were at their age.” Every previous generation outperformed its parents since we began recording in the late 1800s. So, what happened?

The evidence for Repeated Readings is very strong. But no one talks about it, because it’s a bit boring and you can’t make money off it. You can’t sell a repeated reading program, as it can be done with almost any text and requires little expertise.

Tips for using Repeated Reading: 1. Do it once a day for 5-15 minutes 2. Pre-read the text 3. Pre-teach the vocabulary and content 4. Segment words students struggle with 5. Focus on content area texts 6. Consider dabbling with poetry 7. Repeat until prosody is achieved

Every state that lowered standards “to be kind” actually betrayed their most vulnerable students. High expectations plus real support equals real results. CA needs to change before another generation of kids graduates unable to read OR watch a movie. https://t.co/TicoMuPWgS

Film students can't finish movies. Professors curve the grades anyway. And states that 'lowered standards to be kind' betrayed their most vulnerable students.
