Interesting to hear that - yes - nuclear AND solar are both helping Ukraine weather Russian strikes.

Russian strikes have crippled much of Ukraine’s non-nuclear electricity generation. In the summer Ukraine has been getting by thanks to solar energy, with shut offs at night, but looking at expected gigawatt output vs demand, the country faces its hardest winter yet. 22/.

Nuclear power is "unsafe" from @TheGreenParty . it's frustrating that the party so strong on climate goals is so wrong/naive on how to achieve them

For years, I repeated the ideas that 1) missile defense can't work, and 2) the F-35 is a non-functional boondoggle. Both of these turned out to be wrong. So I tried to figure out why so many of us pundits made these mistakes, and how we can do better.

This one from @Noahpinion very, VERY relevant for fusion. - asymmetry of incentives can make progress seem one-sided. - myopia is the enemy of visionary technology development. - Woozle effect is rife in fusion; no true expert would claim it's "unlimited" etc.

Pfff nuclear slow? . Haven’t they heard of fast breeder reactors?.

The Nuclear Energy Summit happening in Brussels tomorrow is a distraction from real climate action. Nuclear power is too slow. Too expensive. Too dangerous. There's no time for #NuclearFairyTales. #NES2024

4) Alternative uses are hot on everyone's minds - and there's demand. Whilst I think heat will be a big lever for fusion, it will be specific use cases. And unlike electricity, not all heat is created equal (temperature)! . Higher T = Higher πŸ’΅πŸ’΅πŸ’΅.

3) Small, advanced, and potentially modular, is where UK is aiming. This despite their meh economies of scale ( and perceived risk (. But many qualitative positives I didn't hear trumpeted: smaller unit means more granular diffusion.

I speak with Jigar Shah (head of DOE’s Loan Programs Office) about all things nuclear, including its recent performance, the strategies that could revive and accelerate it, new nuclear technologies...

2) As a result, people were shy to talk about competition. Nuclear is a great power source, but it is not alone. And whilst some use cases will be profitable, they will not be competitive. This is VERY important to distinguish. And to make nuclear work, we should start here.

1) Vendors dominate the conversation. Whilst it's great hearing about offtake agreements for hours, we need to widen the discussion - more academics/public please!. (note this one is still open to all - get involved!) .

Enjoyed talking policy at @energygovuk 's consultation on Alternative Routes to Market for New Nuclear Projects. Fusion is a long way off, but we need to be thinking about our path to the future now - and piggybacking fission!. Some takeaways:

What an unbelievable saga. I have to warn all my students - and indeed anyone new to energy system modelling - to be VERY cynical in their interpretation. And this is often one case I use to illustrate.

Interesting reading in today's FT Echoes @drvolts 's commentaries on US climate tribalism. Nuclear industry also guilty: instead of accepting the tech's weaknesses and focussing where the tech is strong, it's heads in the sand. .
