We have a paper at CSCW! We studied the visual development of figures and tables from computer vision research papers. Scholarly writing has changed to better fit the online attention economy.

I've had a couple conversations with peers about how they deal with ChatGPT in their teaching and realized others might appreciate my strategies, so I wrote a short blog post with my thoughts. "Teaching Computer Science After ChatGPT" https://t.co/8MH9EnCt5r

Stonehill is a great place to work, we have a beautiful campus south of Boston and (unlike some schools) we're not in danger of closing. We're a small department with small classes and bright students so there are lots of opportunities for big impact.

(the next level up is that creativity is really a social marker we have applied to things, and we can't really ever reconstruct a person's internal process, but that's a little beyond the scope of this view)

In more computational terms, creativity is a hidden internal process which generates Altman's "remix of things" as an emission. "Creative" and "Uncreative" things are statistically identical; a certain amount of empathy is required to recover the hidden process.

I've thought a lot about creativity and different ways we can reduce it to computational processes. This view misses the point. Creativity is less about the result and more about the thinking behind it. This tweet is more of a creative act than anything its formula generates.

everything 'creative' is a remix of things that happened in the past, plus epsilon and times the quality of the feedback loop and the number of iterations. people think they should maximize epsilon but the trick is to maximize the other two.

Another blog post: this one about a parallel I noticed between egocentric computer vision and a concept from feminist theory:

This is a funny result but there actually is a serious relationship between compression and intelligence (or at least how computer scientists think of it). There is much more in common between gzip and chatGPT than there is between chatGPT and a person.

A 14-line Python script using gzip outperforming a 345m parameter transformer model is probably the most hilarious result I've seen all year. https://t.co/E7o9gFNA6u
