I’ve been revisiting Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanawi’s Bihishti Zewar today for its recipes and injunctions on food. A recipe for Nauratan Chutney in which the mango is richly flavoured with garlic, ginger, red chilli, kalonji, aniseed, dried mint, cloves and nutmeg stood out!

Trialling more recipes from our upcoming historic Rampur cookbook - that I’m working on with @DrTarana. These raw, or green, banana kababs were a revelation… perfect texture, excellent flavour. Made them for an evening get-together with friends and they disappeared in minutes!

Been writing intros and editing recipes all week for a forthcoming historic cookbook from Rampur with @DrTarana for @BloomsburyIndia … & I’m really grateful to my husband for taking on the important task of trialling recipes from a reader’s perspective. Qaliya Malghoba tonight…

Whose Urdu is it anyway? Is it the language only of India’s Muslims? This new book — my translation of 16 stories — attempts to bust persistent stereotypes. Out soon from @SimonSchusterIN

If you’ve ever cringed at a “history lesson” on a WhatsApp forward — this is for you. Karwaan is one of the most thoughtful, enriching spaces I’ve come across to actually learn Indian history — with nuance, context, and incredible scholars. Not about “setting the record

Memories of a special couple days in Durham with @RadhaKapuria last month. It was great to meet her colleagues and students - and share my latest research on healthy eating in princely India.
Last month we hosted the amazing @s_lamberthurley from @unishefhistory for the @durham_uni History Research Seminar. She spoke on royal women's relationship to food & shaping of a discourse on ideal diets in princely India, with great insights on doing Gender & Food Histories.
