Not choosing my clients and doing my best for them, no matter who they are or what they've done is what makes this job worthwhile. The irony is the way this person behaves, they will likely need a defence lawyer soon who will no doubt represent them to the highest standard. 5/5.

Perhaps it doesn't help when the government frequently tells the public lawyers are to blame and blatantly demonises us for doing our job. I don't get to choose my clients. That is the essence of a fair justice system. 3/5.

Being paid £75-£150 for a trial in magistrates means effectively working for free. It includes reading hundreds of pages, research, train tickets/petrol, then spending hours running between your client, your opponent and court staff, managing and emotions and trauma.
I know there's lots of focus on crown court work. But it's worth highlighting the standard magistrate court fees, which have remained unchanged for years:. 1st appearance (plea hearing) - £50.Sentence hearing - £50.Case management - £50.Half day trial - £75.Full day trial - £150.
