Covid #lockdowns and cross-border shopping. Food purchases by Swiss debit card holders in Germany are down 80% on January 2020. In France they're only down 20%. That's soon to change i guess. Weekly updates on #Einkaufstourismus at https://t.co/u6l0gFUV5d

Retail turnover (nominal, calendar adjusted) in August 1.6% above 2019. Food & Supermarkets +8.4%, Non-food retail -1.7%, Fuel -12.4% . Year-on-year comparison confirms patterns in payment card data. Our nowcast for DHU index was too optimistic though ..

Interesting update by @BenzMatthias in @NZZ on consumer spending in Switzerland. Realtime data suggests that spending in July 2020 was higher than in June .. with tourism regions benefiting the most....

Holiday over.. Debit card purchases in Ticino and other tourism regions of Switzerland soared in recent weeks due to domestic holiday-makers. But data for last week reveal a significant drop in turnover as summer holidays come to an end. https://t.co/87hszVjcwN #staycation

Due to extensive home office working, consumers spent more outside cities during the lockdown. Consumption is slowly returning. See today's coverage of our analysis by the LSE and also give our Tableau dashboards a try! #TableauLive20 https://t.co/PQcIINu2uW @MartinBrownHSG

Fascinating data from @OppInsights reveal that #consumerspending by high-income U.S. households is hit harder by #covid19 recession. Surprised? High-income consumers most probably spend more on non-essential "locked-down" items (restaurants, non-food retail)..

The rich have cut spending more than everyone else in the coronavirus recession. And their spending has crept back much slower. That’s bad for all of the lower-wage workers – servers, nannies, uber drivers, hotel workers -- who live off that money. w/ @aliciaparlap

Contactless share of credit card pos transactions has actually declined from 60% in Jan to 52% in March! Just shows how hard it is to disentangle changes in payment behavior from changes in consumption behavior due to Covid19 lockdown ......

Contactless due to corona? SNB payment statistics reveal: 55% of debit card point of sale transactions in March were contactless .. but thats compared to 53% in January. Big corona induced change? ... maybe still to come..

Number of ATM withdrawals down by 50% during lockdown. But cash withdrawal volume (in CHF) remained on par with debit card payments! Is payment behavior really changing ? Next few weeks should tell ....
