Consciousness and Timescapes. We recognize that high level computer languages are built on top of lower level code—machine, assembler, C, and so on. But we do not appreciate that the same game could be played by brain and mind. As soon as we start to wonder how wetware . [01

Please remember this is a glorious study of males only and of only a single fully inbred genome of mouse—inevitably C57BL/6J. “We used C57BL/6J male mice…”. And from this we blithely generalize to all mice. Is that science or a faith-based generalization?.
The importance of “when” in calorie restriction-induced lifespan extension. "Caloric restriction promotes longevity, but preserves circadian robustness and provides maximal lifespan extension when administered during the active phase. ".

I like that version. Teacher asks Pippi “Can you tell me what 5 and 7 are?” Pippi’s answers are radically out of synch. I wish she had answered “Two odd positive integers.”. But
@robwilliamsiii To me, subversive includes the desire to bring down the system one is subverting. Outsmarting the system, manipulating the system, hacking the system, aren't subverting the system, they're playing off the system. Your understanding of subversive may differ.

The chapter in which Pippi goes to school—more than irreverent. And playing tag with two police officers. Does subversive imply a bit underhanded attack on conventional belief? Pippi is definitely all above board.
@robwilliamsiii because they are irreverent, not subversive. I was mostly reacting to the word "subversive". Rorty was a reformist (as am I), not a subversive. He wasn't a fan of subverting America, only reforming.

We rely on our institution. NIH overhead should cover this. UTenn has about 6 PB of storage for us. And they happily expand. We have used up as much as 250 TB as scratch space on Lustre during active projects but then compress to under 100 TB when done. Mouse and rat sequence.
ok sci-twitter - does anyone know of a good (i.e. affordable) web resource for storing cell imaging data where we're talking in the 10-100 terabytes range? have people figured out how to comply with the upcoming NIH data sharing mandates?.

Looks damn fit! Go Pat.
Since Twitter is so contentious right now, he’s something to make everyone smile. Here’s 102-year-old Pat Rudd. One of the first @navy WAVES who was shipped to Pearl Harbor in WWII! . Attending a Veterans Event I spoke to tonight, she was unbelievable! Some great stories.

Don’t even think about what Meta blows on VR that blows.
Twitter R&D costs being 50% more than @DeepMind is really quite the puzzle.

More a thing of Brokaw’s great generation—fight in WW2, then start a family in the 1950s, then in the 60s and 70s you look around at wild 20 year olds and say: “ what the hell am I doing at this for”. That’s the original midlife crisis I am familiar with.
Is the midlife crisis still a thing? Seems that this was a boomer phenomenon. For later generations, being in your 20s and 30s is such a bleak struggle and midlife still so hectic so there are no golden years to have a nostalgia crisis over even if you did have the time.

And the free ad copy you and millions provide to Musk for free. And before him Trump, and before him Gingrich. Does no one learn not to listen?.
The more Musk's actions don't make sense from a commercial point of view, the more I become convinced that this is about politics for him, specifically ingratiating himself with the American right and with Beijing. A brief thread with the evidence. /1.

James K Conan’s 78 page critique of Rorty is painful to read. Rorty’s 8 page counterpoints are clear and the last two are full of zingers. Truth (unobtainium in Rorty’s view) vs truthfulness (honest expression of thoughts) as a pivotal distinction. @ironick @rorty_tweeting.
