The social presence effect was a surprise though! It opens up questions about why Jill Watson has this effect and whether the effect leads to other benefits down the line. 7/8.

The teaching presence effect is unsurprising: the questions in this part of the survey address communicating course topics, goals, and due dates, something that is directly addressed by Jill Watson’s ability to accurately answer questions about course logistics. 6/8.

We find a small, positive, significant impact on both the Design & Organization element of teaching presence and on social presence. 5/8.

Participants were students in an online CS course. They were randomly assigned to treatment and control groups, with the control group granted access to Jill Watson. We used the CoI survey instrument to measure the three presences at the end of the semester. 4/8.
