I heard so many discussions of this and the problem is that there is a huge real tradeoff. Bibliometrics measure the wrong thing, “visibility”. Letters and visits measure a different wrong thing including class and agreeableness. Both correlate to positive future science output.
This is amongst the worst takes ever. The opposition to citation counts, impact factor, h indexes etc… is that they are manifestly suck at measuring “merit” in any way that is correlated with what we should care about as a society in science. To the contrary, many of the most
