The case highlights how Trump's immigration sweeps have not been applied evenly: outcry from community members and GOP lawmakers has led some detainees to be released, while others still face deportation.

Over the years, both men were unable to secure residency status because they did not qualify for many visa programs, such as those for relatives of adult citizens, people of certain professions and crime victims, church leaders said. They have no criminal records.

They also deepened their faith. Gomez Velasquez leads a prayer group at St. Anthony of Padua, his home church in Mid City. Velasquez Fuentes’ 16-year-old stepson was confirmed there.

They continued their construction careers — both are skilled caulkers — well after the rebuild ended. They married. Gomez Velasquez met his wife Olivia in 2008 at a streetcar stop; Velasquez Fuentes met his wife Susana in 2016 in Metairie. They had children, all U.S. citizens.

Abner Uriel Gomez Velasquez and Ever Eliseo Velasquez Fuentes joined in the booming post-storm industry Spanish speakers call “reconstrucción” — back-breaking work of ripping sodden flooring, drywall and fried appliances from flooded homes, and then, eventually, rebuilding them.
