Mayor Bowser did not ask for DC Police Chief Smith’s resignation, according to the mayor’s communications director. Currently unclear how hard, if at all, Bowser worked to try to keep Smith in the job. https://t.co/zYJIWN7GBo

D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser praised Smith for her service but did not offer a reason for her departure. Smith said she resigned to spend more time with family.

“The nation’s capital is in crisis,” says @DCPoliceUnion Chairman Gregg Pemberton, testifying in support of the legislation. He’s been vocal critic of the D.C. Council & department leadership and called recent federal intervention a “drastic but necessary step.”

I’m at the hearing for the Make the District of Columbia Safe & Beautiful Act which builds on steps taken by Trump with a commission focussed on immigration, surging federal law enforcement & tidying parks. Starts with a moment of silence for the Guard members shot last week.

Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe—shot last week in DC—remains in serious condition, @wvgovernor says. A nurse asked for a thumbs up if Wolfe could hear, and he responded. He also wiggled his toes. His mom asked the Governor: “Please get the word out that my son Andrew needs prayer.

It is with great sorrow that we can confirm both members of the West Virginia National Guard who were shot earlier today in Washington, DC have passed away from their injuries. These brave West Virginians lost their lives in the service of their country. We are in ongoing contact

Remember when Noem’s bag w $3k in cash was stolen at a DC restaurant in April? A man from Chile pleaded guilty (to that & a string of other thefts). After prison, he’ll surely be deported. He used her Amex at Angolo Ristorante Italiano in Georgetown. https://t.co/r79mKdH2yt

This is achingly beautiful and almost too painful to read in places (but you still should). The cruelty of cancer, the longing to be with your children — and the twist of fate, being RFK Jr’s cousin as he unwinds U.S. health research funding. https://t.co/j8dEKy8KZe
