Ha! My brilliant, supportive Mum just texted me this - she surreptitiously left it below my book in her local @Waterstones

Then there are the problems for identity (who are you, if you is 'we') and moral responsibility (do we have free will in a multiverse?). Philosopher @equreshihurst explores these issues and more in this mind-bending essay - my first commission for @aeonmag

If it’s true that we live in a vast multiverse, then our understanding of identity, morality and even God must be reexamined

In total, God must therefore be overseeing a volume of absolute suffering across the multiverse that is far, far greater than we can imagine.

So for example, theologians have long debated the 'problem of evil': how can a loving, omnipotent God allow so much suffering? It's bad enough in our universe, but if there's a *multiverse*, there are potentially billions of versions of you living way, way worse lives.

An interesting twist on Hugh Everett's 'many worlds' interpretation of quantum mechanics is what it might mean for identity, morality and belief in God

This was a fun BBC project I started months ago, but sadly couldn't see through before I left: A study of friendship in polarised times, by @d_a_robson & @IanSMacRae Delighted to see it live!
bbc.com
The results of a study of BBC.com readers about their friendships suggest there is some cause for optimism amidst the current heated political environment.

You probably like the idea of being broad-minded, but are you also committed to taking the ‘long view’? Join us at Sophia Club London on 17 October for an evening of discussion and music with @rifish and @somban

If you're a science writer/journalist, I'd highly recommend @hvthomson's newsletter (and I'm not just saying that because I'm in the latest edition!) She's currently running a series on the art of pitching your stories to editors... it's invaluable advice

Off to Wales today, to host a three-day New Scientist tour on the theme of deep time... stargazing, cave-exploring and more, with talks and walks. Should be fun!

Here is some advice about how to pitch. At the moment, I'm particularly looking for ideas in the physical sciences and technology, but not restricted to those. Also happy to explain more if you have questions before proposing

I've recently become a commissioning editor at the magazine Aeon (yes, "aeon"! An employer named after a geological time unit is 100% on-brand for me). So if you're an academic, author or expert with a big idea & an essay in you, please do get in touch https://t.co/vev53wGyRo

The first finisher tokens, back in 2004, were washers from the local hardware store! Now over 2,300 events around the world and more than *9 million* registered parkrunners

It was the 1000th Bushy Parkrun today, where the idea began, with just 13 runners (today there were a *lot* more). Every time I do one, I think what a wonderful thing it is - free, volunteer-organised, welcoming to all & surely has saved quite a few lives over the past 20 years

In an act of resistance to entering my mid-40s, I ran a sub 20 parkrun today... something I haven't done for eight years and thought I'd never manage again. It felt realllly good.

In my new feature for our 125th anniversary I ask: What will future historians make of how we lived, based on what we leave behind? Or are we destined to be forgotten because nothing's been saved? https://t.co/Ex5dwifUHy

We’re making more data than ever. What can—and should—we save for future generations? And will they be able to understand it?
